Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra by Fritz Reiner CSO. I can't see why its been so highly rated since not only it's cold, but there seems to be nothing exceptional in terms of technical prowess, interpretation and scoring details as compared with versions I've heard like Solti, Boulez (both CSO and BPO live) and Dorati(RCO)

There actually has been an "overrated recordings" thread before.
But its title was rather misleading: "The one recording you think everyone should bin". This worked as a red flag on a bull for some posters, who got all worked up over "overrated" recordings mentioned.

But that is how it works anyway: one can praise recording A as much as one likes, as long as Sacred Cow recording B is left alone. ::)  8)

Either of the Klemperer Mahler 2 recordings Absolutely love his M9 with the Philadelphia, and grew up with is exceptionally pedestrian M7, but I just don't get his '2's.

Klemperer NEVER recorded with the Philadelphia Orchestra. You mean the Philharmonia. For a person calling himself "rechniquest", that's quite an error.
"Good", is NOT good enough, when "better" is expected

Thanks for that obvious correction - it'd be quite an error for anyone whatever they call themselves. By the way dear - who in blue blazes is 'rechniquest'???

The finale of Klemperer's Philharmonia Mahler 2 is exceptional.

Hehe - I've been on that list for far too long already! Sorry, I don't mean to be disrespectful of the Klemperer recordings of M2, and they are often recommended, but I just can't get along with them. Maybe Santa can bring me the Philharmonia (got it right this time) recording for me to have another listen to :)

I don't find Klemp's Mahler 2 on Philharmonia rather exceptional, but his live Bavarian Radio is scorching hot!

Try Lenny's late DG cycle, the finale is about 10 times hotter. ;)
