Hello. This forum was recommended to me as one of the best and I was delighted to think there was somewhere where I would be able to communicate with like-minded people.
I live in Newcastle Upon Tyne and have taught music in secondary schools al my working career. i now just do some supply teaching which leaves me a lot of time to travel and devote even more of my time to music.
My interests musically are very eclectic. I have a weakness for the late romantics. A new passion for czech ( mainly Janacek and Martinu) and polish (particularly Szymanowski) composers. My interests are truly very wide. Orchestral and chamber music has been a great love both as listener and performer (I play cello and piano) but opera has always fascinated me along with the whole area of theatrical music. Well have no intention of boring anybody so that is enough for now. Hope to get to know some of you and share knowledge and passion. Thanks for reading this. John

Ecletic, well yes, that's fits me too, like a glove...
Apart from opera, which only hold horrors for me, I go along your way quite a bit.
You are very welcome John, and I hope you find your like minded people.
I have no doubt you will however, this forum is stuffed with like minded...... ;D

I am not even sure if I am replying correctly to your kind message. I did not expect such a prompt response. Maybe I really will find this forum to be a friendly one. Thank you so much for your kindness in making me feel welcome. Best wishes John

Hi John!  You'll find many Czech and Polish music fans here (like me).  What composers or works do you enjoy playing on cello and piano?

Anyway, enjoy your time here, and welcome.

Hello and thank you for your welcome. I am pleased to hear you are a fellow lover of czech and polish music. In answer to your question on the cello the whole repertoire is fascinating and not really that large. I think I was brought up on very baroque repertoire. My piano playing is limited by my inability to practice over the years due to other committments getting in the way but no real surprises maybe in me saying that my interests once more are just very varied. hopefully I will write something much more inforamtive in the very near future. Many thanks once more for your friendliness it is much appreciated. John

Welcome

If by chance you speak french, there's a very good belgian website about Czech music : http://www.lamediatheque.be/tchequie/compositeurs.htm

Personnally, I'm not a great fan of Martinu, but I love Janacek and Smetana is one of my favourite composers.

Just going over for the first time with posted introductions.  I've been somewhat remiss.  Glad you like Martinu, Janacek and Szymanowski.  It's been a while, but I listed some of my favorites in my intro posting.  Also like Suk, Novak and Dobias, three other Czech composers.
