Manfred Overture: Mehta/WP/DECCA as part of his complete cycle of Schumann symphonies. A raw, searing performance in the grandest Romantic tradition. The playing of the WP is not as warm and lush as it sometimes can be but you can practically see the sparkkles in the air.

Fraunliebe: Barbara Bonney. Since I heard her in this work on the radio 10 years ago I ran to the CD store to get this cd. The purity of tone and sincerity in her singing is somthing to behold. One of the great lieder performances I know.

1. Manfred Overture - Szell/Cleveland An absolutely volatile and wild performance. Szell really got into this music. It's part of his magnificent Schumann symphony set.

2. Frauenliebe und Leben - Lucia Popp/Geoffrey Parsons (RCA)  It's Lucia and one of the greatest accompanists ever....no need to say more.

Oh boy...this is one by Szell that I do not recall. But I'd REALLY like to hear it.

When it comes to the Manfred o'ture, I tend to think first of Markevitch, though my CD list informs me that I also have Abendroth, Cluytens, Ansermet and Furtwangler doing the piece. On LP? Who knows? Time for a spin-off, I suppose.

1. Manfred Overture

(Furtwängler, BPO, one of the most extraordinary performances of a conductor that I ever heard)

2. Frauenliebe und Leben

(Kathleen Ferrier with Bruno Walter, or Lisa della Casa with Sebastien Peszko)

Sarge,

How does the Mutter/Forsberg compare to the Popp?

The biggest difference is that Mutter uses a violin, and Popp employs her voice.

Well, the violin is a remarkable instrument that mimics quite effectively the emotional range of the human voice. I'd say they were equally effective in the Schumann.  ;D

Seriously, I can't help you. I don't know the Otter recording. But I do know Otter is a great Lieder singer. I doubt you could go wrong with that recording. I just happen to prefer Popp's voice.

Like you I have not heard the Otter but like you I agree that everything I have by her is superbly done.

You are referring to the one in the 6 cd 1944-1953 box released by DG I presume. I don't really like it much, tempi are wayward, texture is much too string dominated. Woodwinds are okay, brass sounds pretty week. No real flow to the music. Sonics are murky and bleak even by 1944 standards. Furt. made some great recordings, can't say this is really one of them.
