The year is finally looking up!   ::)    ;D

I am returning to Ohio to teach Latin and found a German program, and leaving the Purgatory of Hotlanta    >:D    which Ohio's General Sherman    0:)    quite rightly incinerated some years ago.

And while checking for a recording of Sergei Taneyev's long-unheard First and Third Symphonies, I discovered Amazon was showing a CHANDOS release with Polyansky conducting the Russian State Symphony!

Release date of May 22!

http://www.amazon.com/Taneyev-Symphony-No-3/dp/B000NY165G/ref=sr_1_5/104-3021099-2973522?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1177291231&sr=1-5

And obviously if you have not yet heard Taneyev's Symphonies #2 and #4 then you need to correct that lack in your musical education.   $:)

Indeed! I have those two from a Russian Disc CD which I got from BRO for $1.99 a few years ago. Unfortunately they did not have 1 & 3, or I would have gotten those for sure!

And after that, you should look for his 9 SQ :) :)

Trouble is that Polyansky can't conduct for toffee.

What a waste! >:D

Cato

Well, perhaps another conductor/orchestra more to your liking will compete in the Taneyev Symphony Sweepstakes!

CHANDOS ought to offer a package with the complete symphonies at a discount, but that takes some marketing imagination!   :o

Perhaps we can create a mini-storm of interest to have his opera The Oresteia available!    :D

Eventually, given the nature of computers/Internet/chip development/musical balkanization, everything good    0:)   or bad    >:D    ever composed will be available!  Just a matter of time!

And if you are in England/UK, you apparently can already purchase the CD.

QuoteSergey Taneyev's music, written in the late nineteenth-century romantic tradition, is well-crafted, attractively scored and tuneful.

Polyansky and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra are renowned for their recordings of Russian repertoire and have made many acclaimed recordings for Chandos.

Both symphonies receive their premiere recordings with this release.
Taneyev is better known as a pupil of Tchaikovsky who criticised his master for putting ballet music into a symphony! Soviet musicology has also dwelt more upon the theoretical aspects of the composer's work, not least the influence of his huge study, Strict Counterpoint in the Convertible Style. This has meant that many works which the composer was too self-critical to admit to publication (only the Fourth Symphony was published) were studiously reconstructed, and recently musicologists and collectors have reassessed the legacy of Taneyev's music.

Symphony No.1, in E minor was never even performed in Taneyev's lifetime. Reasonable conjecture suggests that it was one of many tasks set for the 16-year old student by Tchaikovsky. Taneyev's orchestration throughout is melodic and lyrical; the example of Tchaikovsky clearly fired his assistant's imagination. By the time he completed his Third Symphony in 1884, Taneyev had taken Tchaikovsky's place as Professor at the Moscow Conservatory. There is much of Brahms's easy-flowing spirit and natural polyphony, within the work, as well as foreshadowing another Russian symphonist, Glazunov.

Taneyev's compositional style is characterised by its fastidious craftsmanship, the composer's inclination to contrapuntal techniques and his adept handling of large-scale forms. A lone figure in late nineteenth-century Russian music, he was openly contemptuous of contemporary nationalist composers and his work owes little to Russian tradition.

Heard the Third (I believe) on the radio and liked it a lot.  Thanks, Cato!

Nolo contendere pleas in this case will still result in a conviction!   $:)

As your penance, you must download free scores of 2 Taneyev chamber works and study them:

http://www.imslp.org/wiki/String_Quintet_No.1%2C_Op.14_%28Taneyev%2C_Sergei%29

in order to compensate for the sin     >:D    of not knowing Taneyev's symphonies!

(Note this was a religious affair, not a puny legal action based on human law!)   0:)

Speaking of affairs, I recall that Tolstoy's wife was infatuated with Taneyev, and that this was somewhat the basis for Tolstoy's story The Kreutzer Sonata.

Not knowing Taneyev's symphonies is not a sin, it's misery.

If Mahler isn't complex, Taneyev is. He was a master of counterpoint.

Yes I forgot these symphonies were already in my collection, and I have a box from Brilliant with some of his chamberworks.

Doncha just love the soubriquet: "well crafted."

Kiss of death or what?

We had a "Taneyev Festival" of sorts last year and some of his music got on the wireless.

Don't bother. Academic, anonymous and hardly Russian.

What this stuff needs is a Beecham.

Hmm.

Happily, I have heard evidence of the contrary.
