15 Gerhard?   Mozart Camargo Guarnieri

Mozart Guarnieri was actually against Koellreutter:
Em 1950, Camargo Guarnieri publica a Carta Aberta aos Músicos e Críticos do Brasil, na qual condena as técnicas modernistas de Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, que, segundo ele, suas técnicas estariam influenciando os compositores jovens a destruírem os fundamentos da cultura herdada da Europa.

In 1950, Camargo Guarnieri publishes the Open Letter to the Musicians and Critics of Brazil, in which he condemns the modernist techniques of Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, that, according to him, would be influencing the young composers and destroy the basis of the culture inherited from Europe.

QuoteAns I've recently read the quote for nr 5 - but where?  Anton Rubinstein!

Right. The violin concerto in G Major Op 46.

And 8 is Adolf Busch, wasn't aware he was a composer?

Right. It's his Concerto for violin and orchestra Op. 20

13 - Claudio Santoro? I admit I'm lost here!

13 - Wolf-Ferrari. Of course!

Yes!. My desert island violin concerto. I wish Ulf Hoelscher had listened to Bustabo's recording before producing his own... he would have noticed the work needs to sound a bit more aggressive.

I detect Google searches being made.  ;D

Bohnke and Santoro? Of course, any printed media less than the full Groove probably have no idea these guys existed, much less wrote for the violin. I'm learning a lot though and will search out some of these works. Had no idea Busch and Rubinstein had written violin concertoes, either. Aulin, Schoeck and Arenski is another matter though not directly easily available.

Do you mean "The bulls of Bashan" from 2000? I have that recording (see at www.violinconcerto.de), or is there a new one?

Yes - that's the one.

17 - A low profile American composer. He taught composition, contemporary music and music theory at Juilliard, a place where, since 1963, he holds a directive post.
He taught Hamlisch, Reich and Glass, among many others.
After listening to a Caruso record, at the age of 17, his interest in music started. Before that, he hadn't read or write any single quaver.

18 - Kind of a Union guy. His two violin concertos were dedicated to the same great-lipped Russian violinist. You better rapidly throw his name in... or he will publicly denounce you. He does have a heart, however, and may financially support your wife for a while once you are dead.

20 - In his concert works for violin and orchestra he wandered through France, Spain, Norway and Russia (in this particular order). A famous large scale work of his is about a drown kingdom.
He studied in Paris with someone who was denounced by Berlioz for showing incompetence when conducting his Requiem.

22 - He has already been named in this thread. A grand-pupil of Viotti...
He Married a famous French soprano (whose name sounds Spaniard). His career ended with a paralysis of his left arm, a career he had pursued even having lost already his sight a few years ago.

26 - A huge (literally) pupil of Stephane Grappelli. His violin concerto is reportedly one of the most overplayed concertos from the last 50 years.
A product of America's rich aural folk tradition.

31 - The merits of this concerto were recently discussed in this forum. One of the many 19th century concertos dedicated to Joseph Joachim. Not only he didn't play it, but in his will Joachim also wrote this violin concerto should be not played (neither published!) until 100 years of the death of the composer.

33 - A short lived French composer, who wrote this poetic work at the age of 41, and dedicated it to a great Belgian violinist.

I can write no more hints... I'll be back on Monday, as I leave tomorrow on bike trip to the mountains.

17 - Piston ? Though the selftaught stuff reminds me of Roy Harris.....

18 - seems to fit Tikhon Khrennikov.

20 - Lalo. So THAT's where I've heard that. He has other works than the Espagnole....

22 - Hubay??

33. -Chausson. Likewise....

Off to work. Some googling will no doubt help on some of the others....but this is educational.

So where does that put the Glazunov??

Time to come clear about the answers to these - and preferably (for the more obscure works) recordings and availability if possible. There's stuff here I want on my wish list.

That hint alone was sufficient, but the clips confirm it: nr. 31 is Schumann.

No snow here. But I spent the last night in a tent, which was on top of a mountain, under a heavy electric storm that just happened to pass by, and decided to stay there for about 4 hours. One of the most scary situations I ever lived.

This is how it looked in the morning, after the lightings and wind had stopped:

I've just arrived home. I would have gone directly to bed, but I had to take some pictures of the current state of my house and get them into my father's pendrive. My house is a mess because today we received unannounced visitors while us (the regular inhabitants) were all absent... we need to send the pictures to the insurance company. Luckily, nothing was robbed; it's just papers and documents all over the place.

Answers tomorrow.

@Manuel - good luck with the insurance company! And, in spite of everything: I like the pictures...
