Ridiculous discounts! Lots of Naxos discs for $5, including most of the American Classics, as well as other labels! The complete list is here (sorted by price).

Post recommendations please :)

Here's one I strongly advise buying, for any and all jazz fans: Art Tatum's Improvisations. Also, piano music of Jose Antonio de Donostia is a lovely album for romantic piano lovers. Jose Cura's Rachmaninov Second Symphony may be of interest. Ditto for Robert Craft's Gurre-Lieder.

Does anybody know about the Naxos gift box series? Are they all individual jewel cases in a giant slipcase, or did Naxos use a space-saving box?

Omg :o

I'd grab this: American Classics - Copland: Symphony No 3, Etc / Judd   and       Bach: Orchestral Suites No 2 & 3 / Erdélyi, Lehel, Et Al   right away.

I have the musically superb American symphonies set. You get paper sleeves in a flimsy white cardboard box with a very short, vague liner note and track listings in one brief booklet. Poor presentation, but an awesome bargain musically.

Lot of dross around the gems.

Both the British and American individual and boxed items on Naxos look good as far as the performers are concerned.

Also, Abbado's Brahms, Gardiner, Marriner, Alsop and others of renown are in there.

Well, quickly went through the 'on sale' items - great prices!  Jotted down a number that peaked my interest (bunch of unknown composers to me but most are 'chamber' works, which was the attraction) - also, the items in BOLD are discs that I already own - reviews are available for many of these CDs on the Arkiv website, so take a look, if interested.

Any comments on the non-bolded items would be of interest - thanks -  :D

Boris - thanks for the recommendation (have the Kodaly in a number of other Haydn SQ performances, but not the Op. 9) - as indicated in my post, the bolded entries are ones that I already own, so I do have the Buchberger performances, as shown below - I picked this up a while back from BRO for about the same price (maybe less?) - reason was that it received a number of good comments on the forum & also excellent reviews (CLICK the image for comments on MusicWeb).  I might still pick up the Kodaly discs because they are quite excellent in this genre - Dave  :D

Hello Sir Sonic, I would like to hear your thoughts on each of these, if you don't mind sharing.  :)

Hello Sir Sonic, I would like to hear your thoughts on each of these, if you don't mind sharing.  :)

Hi Brian - boy, at those prices just buy anything that seems of interest!  ;) ;D

Josef Suk (1874-1935) - got interested in this famous violinist/composer last year - son-in-law of Dvorak & lost his wife early, so a lot of tragedy in his life; have mainly his chamber works (which I enjoy) - the piano music disc is lovely; Czech composer (influences of course include his FIL, but add in some Grieg) - don't think you would be disappointed; check out the Naxos liner notes & reviews of this CD HERE:D

Arthur Foote (1853-1937) - I have the 3 CDs shown in the previous post, but tonight @ dinner put on the Piano Trios just to 'refresh' my memory (I tried to link a previous thread that I started in the 'old' forum on this period of American composition but did not work - there was plenty of info on these composers & many of the CDs in this Naxos series); the piano trio writing is 'romantic' in nature w/ European Germanic influences but enjoyable & well performed - check out this MusicWeb review of the trios (listed as being on the Marco Polo label, licensed over to Naxos); at the bottom of this review are links to the other Foote CDs on the Arkiv site - all of these are enjoyable - and all 4 for just $20! Dave  :)

Thanks!  :)  I have and love Suk's Serenade for Strings (on a truly superb Naxos disc, by the way), so that seems like a logical purchase. Thanks for the Foote links and advice - indeed at this price it is best to shoot first, ask questions later!  ;)

By the way folks, you may not want to order yet. ArkivMusic just added 18 more CDs to the clearance list.  :)

Well, did not get any responses from my list above, but based on 'what' might be of interest to me, I put in an order for the items highlighted in RED - will report in the 'listening thread' on their arrival -  :D

Brian

I'm thinking of splurging on the 'British Orchestral Collection' gift box of 25 Naxos discs, but why on Earth did they include the early, mediocre Slovak performance of Holst's Planets, rather than the new one with David Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra?  :(
