J.S.Bach occupies a pivotal place in the history of music. His compositions represents both the height of the Baroque and the beginning of the Modern Age of music. Filmed in Leipzig, London and America, this documentary both fascinating and authoritative features specially-filmed extracts with John Eliot Gardiner conducting the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, performing the Mass in B minor, Andres Schiff playing the Goldberg variations, Jacques Loussier improvising on the Toccata and Fugue in D minor as well as demonstrations by Ton Koopman,Tini Mathot, Joanna Macgregor and the Thomanerchor of Leipzig. Biographical and critical commentary is provided by leading Bach scholar, Christoph Wolff and Robert Marshall, while Charles Rosen and Jonathan Miller discuss Bach's masterpiece the St. Matthew Passion.

Thanks, I have only seen Part 7, which is Mahler. I think Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Wagner, Beethoven, and Verdi are included too.

Just to clarify, all 8 parts posted above are the complete Bach episode.  0:)

I meant the entire mini series of course. You only posted the Bach, which is very nice, if I have time, I shall post the Mahler one in the future.

Thanks, James, for posting. Don't know if you posted the youtube videos or just this link but either way, I appreciate anything about Bach I can find.

:)

Opus106

Could someone please tell me the piece that is being referred to (and played) by the pianist Jacques Loussier at 6:15 in part #3?

Thanks for the videos, James. :)

It is the chorale prelude Zion hört die Wächter singen from Cantata 140 (Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme), also arranged for organ solo as one of the so-called Schübler chorale preludes.
"I don't know what sforzando means, though it clearly means something."
