I'm sorry you don't like the Viola Concerto, Sean. I was very impressed by it. However, maybe after I get my first Wuorinen cd, I can make a more informed judgement.

Well, even if we apply Sean's yardstick here, if one starts out impressed by the Schnittke Viola Concerto, then in comparison Wuorinen's music will make a yet greater impression, Andy!

I'd recommend the Mass for the Restoration of St Luke's as one starter.

Thanks! And I am very impressed with Schnittke's Sonata Trio as well. Maybe I'm intellectually "limited" for liking the Viola Concerto so much ????

Quote(Artusi thought Monteverdi was full of strange ideas, too . . . and now, you have to practically be a musicologist to know who Artusi was   ;D

c1540-1613, I just looked him up, hadn't heard of him, but that's not saying much I guess- seems he was keen on rhythm and didn't care for Monte's use of time signatures; as I understand it though he was all for standardizing tones and semitones...??

One of Artusi's objections was to Monteverdi's unorthodox treatment of dissonances.

I play the Bashmet performance over and over, and see little reason at this time to try another. I've heard a young woman play this concerto on You Tube, and that was quite good as well.

Haven't listened to much Wuorinen yet. I'm currently in a predominately Wagner phase.
