Is Global warming Fact or Fiction?

Al is the Ralph Nader of environmental issues and cannot be ignored
Al has jumped on a very popular bandwagon but his stance is still the right one
Al is an opportunist politician who has supporting a cause that lacks any real basis in fact
The global warming effect is grossly overstated and Al is 'Chicken Licken'

The new erato

Global warming is fiction while weapons of mass destruction in Iraq are fact, according to one G Bush II.

I absolutely believe in the scientific models that predict global warming, and a majority of the current scientific community agrees that some level of global warming has occurred (or will be occurring).  The only point of contention is the magnitude and ultimate effect of an otherwise inevitable onslaught of global warming.

Have you seen any credible scientific evidence that refutes the inevitability of global warming?

Please share.

It would be a mistake for you to conflate Al Gore's crusade with the meritorious scientific hypotheses which support and undergird the scientific theory of global warming.  Don't allow your dislike for Al Gore to taint the scientific realities facing the planet.

I've seen the movie a few times, and I admit that some of its scientific "facts" may be questionable ...... but the movie is a good starting place for basic information as to the scope and nature of the problem.
D minor should post more often on non-musical themes! Good post.

Wish this global warming would hurry up, then.  It's ---kin' freezin' here.  I'll press pause when it reaches the same temperature as Madrid.  That'll do nicely.

It's happening (here in Finland it's going to be a "black" Christmas again) and people do nothing. Even the mayor of the city I currently live in (Helsinki) said we need more cars in the centre. What the hell?  >:( As if the traffic wasn't bad enough.

OK, I've sat back and watched so now is the time to ramp up the discussion.

This makes interesting reading

Interesting to see all the dollar signs in the rubric!

He talks as if dramatic climate change is already a proven fact. He believes that man can counteract the power of nature. Most astounding of all he believes that the silent majority can change financial policy. This man is a foooooool!

Seeing Al Gore being presented with the Nobel Peace Prize has caused me to think very hard about about the merits of the current award and even more, about the merits of his hypothesis. He proposes that the planet is undergoing rapid warming and that the main cause of this is 'greenhouse gas' emissions such as CO2, etc. As an arch skeptic and having seen his 'Inconvenient' movie I am still not convinced but I thought I'd find out what my fellow forum members thought. Do you think that Al is right, are you undecided, or is this a load of media driven hogwash?

The 60 Minutes crew has   a  special report on GW tonight.I have the 1 hour program on record.
For the skeptics of this modern phenomenon, if you can find just one climatalogist who does not believe in GW, post the guys name.

There area   group of climatalogists studing the 2 polar caps. They all, 100% know as a  PROVEN SCIENTIFIC MEASURED FACT that melting is occuring and its nothing pretty.

but I knew something was up 25 yrs ago here in New Orleans due to a  odd summer quirk in the local weather.
I witnessed something that I had never seen before while growing up in new orlaens.
Then 10 yrs ago, more things with water levels occured. Then 1 yr pre Katrina, i took 2 people to the canal near my house and showed them how how the tides were in the canal, /Lake pontratrain in realtion to the level of the roof tops on the street.
I've seen some of the weirdest weather patterns  in new orleans over the course of 25 yrs. and this winter has been one that falls right into this "weird" pattern.
The weather has been anything BUT NORMAL. Its like a  twilght zone.
I;ve been through Katrina at my home when the storm hit and heard the 17th street canal give way with a  loud double explosion like rumble. I've been through Hurricane Betsy 1965, the eye passed over the city.
So it really takes alot to impress with with any weather phenomenon.
This winter was wild, no winter since i can remember was even close to what has occured here. . And this my friends is just the beginning of things to come.
:-X
( lips sealed)
But don't say "we were not forwarned...no one told us anything...why didn;'t someone say something about this long ago"

But he did. He was on TV, you and everyone else were into their own business, thoughts on other things.

one scientist on the TV show tonight says that in the future, if warming continues at a  expotential rate, in 100 yrs, sea levels could rise by 'tens of feet"
But who really cares about 100 yrs from now?
I think we should think closer to home, 5 yrs from now, 10, 20. Beyond 20 yrs, its pointless to even consider "what might even more happen"
First lets consider what will happen in the next 5 yrs?
Anyone care to takea  wild imaginary guess?
No I didn't think so.
Then why even think to consider 10, much less a  100!!! yrs from now.
the future is not 100 yrs from now. The future is now, 2008.
Do ye hear? Ye understand?
:-X
( lips sealed)

Whats taking place today  i first saw the initial event 25 yrs ago, but just stood there looking north across lake pontratrain that summer about noon, just gazing out across the lake, trying to figure out what that phenomenon meant. This weather event  occured over a  period of a  week or so.
That phenomenon 25 yrs ago was the very first sign of things to come. How about that, i was the first to observe GW, but could translate into a  cognitive definition.
GW was totally unheard of 25 yrs ago, the term ca,e into existence i guess like 15 yrs ago.
But there was someone long before me, a scientsit who know and told everyone on his many ocean geograpic films in the 50's/60's of possible outcomes if things continued as they were. Or maybe jacques didn't know. i 've yet to read his books.
Anyone know if Cousteau mentions GW/pollution/global population growth effects on the climate/polar caps?
I think the caps really starting melting just after he passed away.
Now I understand.

ahh here we go , The Prophet speaks, at least I've always believed in the man as The Prophet.

http://www.ecomall.com/activism/emag.htm

so all these new mega pumps the Corps Of Engineers built just blocks from my house, the new levee systems all across s louisiana, could be nothing buta   waste of money.
IOW if sea levels continue to rise, some flooding will occur in NO, with rain water more difficult to pump, uphill. Not to mention if another hurricane does come in 30 yrs from now. they come this way about every 30, but if one even just enters the gulf, our coast line along the lake pontratrian/Gulf Of Mexico rises significantly.

And then there is something even greater to consider. NYC, she lies in the path of 'that rare hurricane" which makes its way up the coast.
Miami is a "sitting duck" right on the tip ofa peninsula. I mean like gone in a  flash.
These are things we need to consider today, 2008, not 2018.

and china? poor miss china, with all her energy needs. How is she going to deal with the  necessary changes?

AND NO MORE FRIGGIN NASAU OUTTER SPACE PROGRAMS, Yeah it was cool to have some satilites up  in space and the hubble telescope pucs, really awesome. But lets take those billions and put them into solving GW.
and also no more wars efforts in iraq or whereever.
Let al qaeda get control of the oil fields. We and the world will deal with that AS AL QAEDA MAKES ITS MOVE.
China will be more than happy to give us assistance in getting the oil back.
China has a  army of 100M+ reserves. Al qaeda has no chance. like army ants on a  cockroach will china become to al qaeda.
So that $30B a   month!!! can go into finding immediate solutions into GW.

I pulled these three off the internet in just 5 minutes. Let's face it Paul, it's obvious that you're very happy to accept anything the media throws at you as an undeniable fact if you place your faith in a "60 Minutes" article.

I am a skeptic and I will only accept scientific evidence that results from  properly conducted empirically driven research. My skepticism comes from many years of seeing "the facts" presented from the scientific community only to have them turned completely arse about face within a decade or two.

As for your own observations, just ask yourself this question. When can I remember a stable weather pattern that lasted for more than 5 years and if I checked out my memories, would they match the stastistics?
Cheers

have not look at the linksm have zero intention to. I have no idea what they say, and could care less.

why hech every ecological scientist in the world come come up with 1000000000000 stuides showing how GW is not really a  threat, that they made an error, its not what they thought it was,,, blah, blah, BLAH

I know what I  see with my own eyes, right here in New Orleans. I do not need to go to the polar ice caps to be proven to my theory.

Hows dem apples for ya?
And there were 2  guys i worked managers i worked for , one NYC the other Detroit.
they called me "water boy " based on that movie about the idiot soth louisiana kid who is so stupid on the HS football team.
Little do they know I passed both those nothern boys up in wisdom and knowledge.
Out of darkness comes the light.

So I responded to your challenge and posted what you asked me for and you can't even be bothered to look - ignorance is bliss!

Anyway, its warm here, when it is supposed to be cold, and a little snow would not come amiss.
This has been for years, so....
Where I live, that's not normal, global warming, yes.
It would have happened anyway, and we are just speeding it up, that's all.
Research shows that this happened several times to earth.....

Thanks harry for that honest and eye open look at REALITY.
Except for your last sentence.
Earth's ozone layers have never been polluted by man made chemicals as man has only been putting pollutants in the stratosphere for 100 yrs now.

I choose freely to not talk with skeptics,
The dabate is not "weather" (couldn't resist pun) GW is real or not, its what can we do.
I have zero things to say to Holden and other "prove its real' style mentality.
What you see now is a  foretaste of things to yet come.

Global warming is fiction while weapons of mass destruction in Iraq are fact, according to one G Bush II.

Bush can't pressure china too much on GW issues, we need all the allies we can get in the fight against al qaeda.

But Bush seems to not be aware you can't fight and beat al qaeda by strong offensives all the time.
Let al qaeda regroup, the smash, regroup, then smash.and so on til who knows for how long. maybe a  1000 yr war., or until, the 2nd comming of Christ , whichever comes first. Once alqaeda touches the oil supply, china will drop in for a  "cup of tea" with al qaeda.
then its all over for alqaeda.

Now back to topic.
If icecaps continue to melt, 'the city that care forgot", once so nick-named a  century ago, , new orleans will be threatened to go underwater.
isn't this a  concern for the rest of the country, to lose a  great american city like NO? Don't you care about us "down here", with all the wonderful gifts we give to america.
i mean america won't be the same w/o .....BOURBON STREET ;D
