Michel

I've been listening to Liszt for three solid months and nothing else, slowly exploring Howard's mammoth set.

It has been the best musical experience of my life.

For those of you who criticize Liszt with your empty slogans: woe unto you!

He was a special artist.

It happens that, last days, I listened to Liszt Troisième Année de Pelerinage.

The interpretation of Kocsis is superb, but I am very far from your enthusiasm regarding Liszt.

Les Années de Pelerinage include some authentic masterpieces, such as Vallée de Oberman, Dante Sonata and, regarding the third year, Jeux d'Eau à la Villa d'Est.

But in other moments, in special in this 3rd year, such as Angelus or Sunt Lacrimae Rerum, I feel that pathos and a loud rhetoric replace true and deep inspiration. I feel the same regarding the  most part of Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses.

If you have an opportunity, you might want to peruse some scores for his solo piano music ........ mindblowingly brilliant ....... on a level unmatched by any composer .........

Which issues have you heard so far?

Holden

I've got a question which is not a facetious one but quite serious - have you been feeling depressed and has listening to Liszt helped?
Cheers

Holden

Hi Holden,

Interesting question. No, I've not actually been depressed at all - quite the opposite! :)
