I accidentally forgot to vote for Verdi. Other than that, Respighi, Puccini (strangely, not listed..), and Rossini.

Ordered this one, because I love the music....

Where did you get that?

This Brilliant issue is not on the European market yet.
I have it from the local drugstore called Kruidvat, they are the first to release the Brilliant issues.
But I 've got word, that because of a production problem it is delayed till the first of March.
Just my luck.

You have to add Frescobaldi, my all-time favoured Italian composer.
Seconded
this guy's missing

Wanderer

I voted for Vivaldi (listening to his motet In turbato mare irato right now), Rossini and Respighi; their entire output is a constant delight to these ears. Many other favourite composers of course (Monteverdi, Scarlatti, Cherubini among others) that could have made it into the list (not Verdi).

Hah, found it on the Brilliant web site. At first i thought it was a complete set of Palestrina's madrigals (knowing Brilliant), and i nearly got a heart attack but it appears it's only a recording of the first book. Still, not bad.

Where Puccini and Boito. Given the obscurity of one or two of the composers on the list, it seems odd that they were relgated to "other".

We'll add that to the list of the "Top 100 Flaws" of this poll .........

Seeing as the obvious names are going to be voted for anyway, I went with:

Dalapiccola
Busoni
Scelsi
Scarlatti
Monteverdi

The latter are obvious themselves, I suppose, but I couldn't not. I think these 'top 5' polls need to be expanded to top 10 because I am feeling guilty not having gone with Verdi etc.

You really meant to say 'top 35' rather than 'top 5', correct?

Nah, 10 would do me. I'm not greedy  ;D

I think putting a time limit down on polls stinks because people who join this forum years later don't get to vote. :( Anyway, I vote for Malipiero, Respighi, Pizzetti, Vivaldi, and Corelli as my 5 favorite Italian composers.

springrite

Had I voted, I'd certainly vote for Berio and de Sabata.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

The new erato

Interesting that there's no Casella. His fortunes definitely have taken a turn for the better in recent times due to discs from Naxos and Chandos, and from what I've heard he's a candidate for the best Italian composer of the Malipiero/Respighi period.

Luke

Should I be happy that my 5 would still be the same 5 they were three years ago? Or does it show signs of ossification? Anyway, they would be, and with the same 'I wish I could choose 10' caveat:

and if there room I would certainly want to add:

Matteo da Perugia and one or two others of his ilk - Landini, Anthonello da Caserta...
Gesualdo
and that Verdi chap (who I would have voted for first time round if it wasn't clear he'd win without my vote)

Sergeant Rock

I missed this poll. Odd. Anyway, my five would be

Gesualdo, Vivaldi, Donizetti, Verdi, Busoni
