Puccini and Vivaldi.
Are there any others to really consider? ::)

Were you hit in the head as a child? What about Palestrina? Geusaldo? Monteverdi? SCARLATTI??!

Missing on the list:

Matteo da Perugia
Cipriano de Rore
Andrea Gabrieli
Claudio Merulo
Alfonso Ferrabosco
Luzzasco Luzzaschi
Luca Marenzio
Giovanni Trabaci
Sigismondo d'India
Girolamo Frescobaldi

...and may that forever be the case!

I'll put in a good word for poor old Ponchielli and his warhorse, 'La Gioconda' that still retains a tenuous link to the repertoire but 'Marion Delorme' is, arguably, better and, therefore, worthy of  the occasional revival.

Poor sod died young in respect that he had yet to reach full maturity. Give him a listen.

Wolf-Ferrari. I know he was half German but he wrote a lot of likeable Italian music and some really great tunes.

What about Morricone? Gets my vote!

Verdi is, clearly, the greatest of them all.

Do the Italians get a day off on 'Verdi day'?

They should!

Oh, now this really is impossible; only five Italians?

Well, I must go with certain Usual Suspects:

Monteverdi
Palestrina
Puccini
Rossini
Verdi

Morigan

Lulli might have been born in Italy, but he can hardly be considered as an Italian composer... He totally invented French opera and the whole French mid-Baroque style.

You are absolutely right. John Fernstrom was born in China, and I have yet to hear any claim of him being a Chinese composer.

Where the hell is Puccini???  :o :o :o

Post Vivaldi, Puccini is all I would seriously consider as a  favorite.

ChamberNut

Would Puccini even be in the Top 5 of favorite opera composers?  ???

Depends.  If we go by who sells opera tickers and CDs, then Puccini's status is not even a question.

These are easy for me to agree with.

If we were considering top Italian Opera composers, I'd say hell yes!

Nice to see some mentioning Donatoni, whom I'm just recently discovering.  Last year I heard the sextet eighth blackbird do his Arpège, which I thought was just great, and I've heard a couple of other chamber pieces I can't recall at the moment.

My choices:

Berio
Donatoni
Scelsi
Verdi

and under "Other," Sciarrino

Glad to see that il Maestro got the highest percentage of votes so far. Verdi had an outstanding musical mind as did Domenico Scarlatti. This puts Verdi in a class above your usual opera composer, similarly, "Mountain Green" or Monteverdi. The greens really had it.

(Does anyone REALLY listen to Palestrina for pleasure?!?!?)

The new erato

Me as well. Definitely extremely beautiful stuff, and anybody who doesn't hear that should have his or hers ears examined. Doesn't mean one ought to listen to it; but one ought to be able to hear the beauty. And not my favorite renaissance composer BTW; I prefer my polyphony slightly grittier.

Ordered this one, because I love the music....
