Head-case I think the point of the Nabakov quote is to highlight the incredible (and terrifying?) brevity of life and how insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things. You're not really one for subtlety though, are you?

What's so sophisticated about walking around worrying about how terrifyingly brief you life is?  It seems like if life is so brief you should concentrate on more useful ideas, like how incredibly good pistachio ice cream is.
