Well, they are different spheres of satisfaction, hard to weigh the two.

And, in any event, the two media inform, and interact with, one another.

Agreed!!

...I saved LOADS of money.

Oh yeah, I've "saved" loads of money like that - in fact I "saved" a load more this very afternoon, after Bruce helpfully posted his link to those scoundrels in NY.  (Thanks Bruce  ::) )

That's why I am on the market to find a bigger house ZB! :)

Well, I don't have any furniture I care about except my Lester grand piano from 1928, so moving for me is simple. Our last move was in 1999 and there are still unpacked boxes of books. But I know in general the whereabouts to fetch something, if needed...

You make me curious about you!
Love that bit of unpacked boxes. :)

That a hefty kind of site my friend, and if I want to know, this is the site to go, so I will if the wine works within me.
Amazing it is, did not know that that sort of sounds existed. ;D

I'm just trying to open your eyes.  ;)

Classical music is not everything, it's only 50 % of everything.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Oh yes I see, one improves appreciation and understanding of the other.  I should read more... I'll tell you if I check anything neat out of the library Karl. :)  Do you take advantage of the Harvard and MIT libraries?

karlhenning

Cambridge isn't as convenient to get to, David, but I do check the odd book out from the Boston Public Library from time to time.

Oh I've been there!  Really nice library, and lions.  But I remember going outside to see the throngs of people and tall buildings was intimidating. :(  I don't think I could go there on a regular basis.

Haha, I thought you lived in Cambridge!  Woops! ;D

Oh, so it's thanks to you that I got this mailing from Who's Who in Cambridge, eh?  ;D

Déjà vu from the Old Forum -  ;D (believe we had a 20+ page thread on the same topic!) -  ;)

New Year's resolution - I finally split-out my 'classical' & 'non-classical' CD database (using Access), and also on the printouts made tabulations of the number of items & the number of discs; so about 1800 CLASSICAL CDs at the moment & 1500 NON-CLASSICAL CDs - need to get that classical number up!  I've been collecting CDs since late 1984, so the cost has been 'spread-out' over a couple of decades - :)

5000-7000+ cds?? Where do you guys store them all?

My total collection is about 1500 which takes up a whole wall in my 'second office'. Of those about 300 are classical, but the number is growing as its pretty much all I'm buying at the moment.

The rest...?

500 Progressive
100 Sinatra
100 '75-'79 AM Gold
100 '70s library, production & soundtracks
100 Lounge
100 Pre-rock crooners
The balance is made up of late '60s psych, jazz, Bob James, pop/rock comps etc...

I guess around 500, and there's somewhere between 500-1000 that I've sold.

Sadly for books I only have a few books on Beethoven and that's it.  I was thinking about seeing if there are any interesting biographies in the public library to read.

Here is a question-- which do you attain more satisfaction from: your cd collection or reading material related to classical music?

And while we're on the topic, since ZB mentioned it-- how many books do you have on music? :)

That IS an interesting question, David. I have a mere few thousands of CD's. I don't know how many, actually, at a guess, 3000. And a surprising number of downloaded digital albums too, for that matter.

I have maybe 125 books on CM. It was your question on which gives me greater pleasure that intrigues though: in truth, I don't know the answer, it will require some inward searching. I think, though, that it is the combination of the two that provides the greatest satisfaction, since what I learn from the books increases my appreciation of the music, and being able to hear the music increases my appreciation of the books. Synergy, baby!  :)

100 Sinatra is that a combination disc and vinyl? I thought I owned alot of his albums and alot of duplicate discs but 100 is alot....you must own a few of the box sets....

Of course  ;D

Most of his vinyls were inherited from his father and many are very rare.  Including Schellac and those vinyls at 180grams and beyond, the ones where you need a Schwarzenegger Right Arm to lift them.

I have about 300+ vinyls, many not released on cd yet, but what a chore to play them and keep them clean.

Still, they are beautiful to play, touch, hold and admire  ;D  Even if its only once or twice a year (binge playing)
Tony,
Believe it or not in some instances I like the sound of vinyl over discs.....

Vanessa wanted my beautiful LPs mounted on the wall in our new house as decoration. I wouldn't say I vetoed the idea, maybe just postponed.

This is a great idea. I had alot of my vinyl mounted and framed and put in my old listening room. I have many thoughts of doing it again....It  really looked great.......

Hi Robert

Yep, I've got all the box sets Dorsey, Columbia, Capitol, Capitol Singles, Reprise, In Hollywood and In Vegas. I've also got the smaller break downs of Columbia, Capitol & Reprise which I got before the big boxes plus a selection of single discs. I've only got a few Sinatra lps.

Attending a Sinatra tribute concert tomorrow night [not an impersonator] so that should be interesting.

Simple question a simple answer, but only count your classical ones.

I've got 500. Not bad for three years of listening, one of which was spent without a single purchase and only a few minutes of listening...

Now come on, how many do you have Harry? :)

I have 400 cds all classical (of which 50 complete operas) all purchased over a two year period. Storage has become a SERIOUS PROBLEM.  I stopped buying a few months ago and thought I had kicked the habit but guess what happened?  I discovered how enjoyable those operas are when performed on stage.....now I have DVD buying problem, and those J.S. Bach cantatas keep haunting me....

Incidentally anybody here know of a good DVD recording of Parsifal? (I think this question would be better served in the opera dvd section of the opera and vocal discussion forum but I figured I'd ask anyway)

Just for the hell of it...

Dorsey The Song is You 5 discs
Columbia Blue Box         12 discs
Best of Columbia Years    4 discs
The Capitol Collection    21 discs
Capitol Singles Collection  4 discs
Best of Capitol Years       3 discs
The Reprise 'Suitcase'    20 discs
The Reprise Years           4 discs
In Hollwood                    6 discs
In Vegas                        4 discs 1 dvd

So theres 83 discs in boxsets alone.

By the way I started with the smaller sets then upgraded to the bigger ones as I got into his music more.

I own all the capitol and reprise and a few columbia vinyls.   I have entertained the thought of getting some equipment to transfer all my albums to disc....It just seems like so much work....I remember copying all that stuff to cassettes...I still have about 10 full boxes of cassettes in my garage....I think its about 2,000 cassettes.....its with all my old cassette players.....I still occassionally use my walkman professional, which also records.....I used to take it to all my concerts and tape them.....
