Thank you very much!
This is extremely helpful.
I will of course buy the Boskovsky set, and both Karajan's recording.
Have you anything to add about this recording?
Do you know the singers, and if this conductor did well?
The 1949 recording does not bother me at all.
What do you think?

Sorry, Harry, I've never heard it so I can't really comment. Streich is already on Karajan I anyway, and the rest of the singers wouldn't tempt me away from Karajan's cast.

The very best conducted Fledermaus is the one with Vladimir Jurowski at Glyndebourne, with the perfect Wiener Schwung, vitality and charm:

And of course if you are broadminded and love controversy watch the one from Salzburg when the director Hans Neuenfels gives the finger to the staid Salzburgers - Marc Minkowski on the podium gives the performance his usual enthusiasm - :

In terms of performances on CD, I love this as much as any.

Everyone is on top form. The conducting has fizz and energy without rushing anyone. The sound is excellent. I do not know of a better Orlovsky than Fassbaender and the ensemble lead by Fischer Dieskau where he calls on mankind in terms of brothers and sisters, is elevated almost to that wonderful final act ensemble in Mozart's Figaro.

I also get enormous pleasure from the first Karajan and Translondon has explained all about it. The version with Janowitz was a must for me, because of her. She is excellent except for the pay-off in her main aria. Generally, that set will also provide lots of pleasure.

The second Karajan has just never done it for me, it flows less well than the first and I do not like the overblown party scene.

Domingo conducted a version; but I got rid of it, not bad...but not up to the standard of the ones I kept.

Well, that seals the deal for the Boskovsky anyway, thank you Mike.
I rather enjoyed this set allready.

Have you seen the Karajan Vocal set issued by EMI Harry?

I am almost tempted as there is a deal here I don't have and a lot of fantastic recordings, the first Karajan Fledermaus is amongst them.

Yes, but that's in english right?

Had to find my magnifying glass to read the small print on the cover:

Sung in German with English, Dutch and Spanish subtitles.

How about that: Dutch!  8)

Please show me a record with I.Hallstein.

Here is a listing of recordings with this singer in them.

Although I have some of them, I have never noticed her as a distinctive voice and Amazon at least has no recording of her in Fledermaus.

Erna Berger is indeed a fine vocalist. I like her very much....

uffeviking,

YOU are apparently talking about DVDs. While the other lame-brained neanderthals on this forum that have responded to you are talking about cds.
You haven't chosen the company you keep, very well.
"Good", is NOT good enough, when "better" is expected

uffeviking

Not much of a choice, Iago! My only hope is to guide the Neanderthals to the discovery of a medium we, the cognoscentes, have enjoyed for the past ten years at least.  ;)

What are these new-fangled "DVDs" you speak of?  So much new technology to keep up with.  On the bright side, I've finally figured out how to set the time on my Betamax!  Learning to program it should only take another year or three.

Of course, the OP did ask about recordings, but I guess Iago can't be bothered to read all two pages of this thread.   ::)  DVDs are wonderful, but many great performances are sound-only recordings, and I'm not prepared to exclude those from consideration.  In any case, it's really not an either/or proposition.

Wendell, what's a Betamax?  ???
