I was listening to them yesterday and wishing the sound was better. Early digital urrr. I wonder if Columbia also did an analog recording at the time - the same way they did when Gould recorded the Goldbergs? You would think that sony would have released it if they had it but then they are pretty lame when it comes to re-releasing older recordings.

You must have ultra high sound recording standards, as I find the Gould English Suites to be of excellent quality, never ceasing to allow Gould's similarly unceasing nuanced genius to shine through. But that's just me....    ;)

In second reading of your post, I can understand your wonderings between analogue and digital, and in the English Suites' case, i'm not at home to check exactly what I have. Nevertheless, i'm guessing your quality requirements vary rather significantly to mine...and why not, I suppose?

Of course I'd rather have it in less than perfect sound-and it's certainly not terrible- than not have it at all but when Sony released the analog version of his late Goldberg's in the State of Wonder set I was really struck with how much better the sound was compared to the digital recording.

I do not understand the early digital reference. My Gould English Suites (CDs published 1986) were recorded between 1974 and 1976.

They were remastered in the 1990's for The Glenn Gould Edition, and probably for Sony's more recent DSD reissues. I have not listened to these later remasterings, remaining pleased with the 1980's.

Maybe I'm wrong about this being a digital recording. I don't have my copy in front of me at the moment but I thought this was recorded in the Eighties.
