Because all prior hijackings involved hijackers that did not plan for themselves to die and who therefore had no plans for crashing the airplane. It was safer to negotiate with them and get the plane to an airport rather than introduce weapons into an aircraft, where sensitive equipment could be damaged by bullets. Remember that in most aircraft the mid-cabin sits on top of a large fuel tank which is the first to go empty after takeoff after which it is filled with easily ignited fumes. Remember also that a puncture of the cabin wall will cause decompression. There are other vital organs of the aircraft that could likewise be damaged and could significantly impair the integrity and operability of the aircraft. 9-11 changed everything in that the hijackers hijacked the plane for the specific purpose of crashing it and killing themselves in the process. It is a security conundrum that isn't as easily solved as putting armed guards on planes. So far those armed guards have not exactly been effective. The shoe bomber was overwhelmed by unarmed passengers, while air marshals have killed at least one innocent unarmed passenger in Miami.

agree, good post

BUT what about a  marshall with  a  stun gun, mace spray, etc  on every plane prior to 9/11?

And especially now, one armed with such tools to deter a  hijacking.
This way americans could have the sufferings in airports reduced by 50%.
But as this is america, nothing seems to work right about flying these days.

Gustav, i was refering to the new more enlightened europeans, they know better now that to fall for such tricks.

oh, okay. My bad, I thought you meant the old and less enlightened Europeans also, you know the ones who predominately resided in Germany and Italy about 50 years ago. But, i suppose now, after 50 years they are more "enlightened".

Thing is the europeans can read right through propaganda, they know when they smell a  rat
Most american's can't *smell a rat* the size of a   neutria ;D

btw , its true we do eat these rodents on special ocassions. tasty critters, taste just like rabbit or chicken.
Why get all squeamish, the french love *escorgot*, = snails! :D

Hey, ever eat a gaspagoo?   ???

About Europeans and rats, I don't know, really.  Maybe they got fooled by those critters enough times to know when one is disguised now.  Or maybe not.  Maybe some can tell us.

Yeah the germans and italians really got sucked in. With the russians, Stalin snuck in through the back door and just made himself at home.

Yes that's what I meant *more enlightened*, just the word WAR makes europeans trun green with a  upset stomach. They won't fall again for warmongers. Ain't gonna happen. *Been there/done that*

Now i'll finish what i have to say on Danny's post :)

Yeah the europeans can smell a  military rat, so no going down that road, *libertation via war*.
Its the EEU, european now is tied together by an economic umbilical cord, so no one nation can go to war w/o the others consent. Besides geramny hardly has a  military force. The pygmies of africa could invade germany and might actually win, germany is that pacifist. ;D

So if not military wolves in sheeps clothing , whats the next *wolf in sheeps clothing* for grand old europe?  ??? ::)

Oh i know, but ain't saying. :)

talk about timing.
How do i do these things.
look at the New Orleans Times Picayune news today

*New Orleans Police SHOW OFF new crime fighting gear*
Bring em on baby, we're ready

yes thats the police chief and mayor ray nagin who lives in dallas, and is mayor of new orleans, the guy who made the famous "NO will once again bea   chocolate city", after having a first class seat with Louis Farakan on a  flight from los angeles.
NO's voters elected nagin , AFTER he made that comment about NO will be a  chocolate city again.

btw that is a  nice looking rifle isn;t it $:)

But, from memory, the French and Dutch people voted against the EU Constitution or something like that in a referendum.  I think other nations did, too.  Maybe they smelled a rat..................or a gaspagoo! ;D

Interesting.
we'll have to wait on those who are up on current european events to confirm your memory.
I can see how the dutch and french are not too eager for any  big power organization. First half the century politics was more than enough.
They might be the most reasonable of the european mindset.

america has yet to wake up to the fact that the pentagon is not for the american people , but is in fact a wasteful bureaucracy, camouflaged ;D as a  *protector of the american people*.

Well, we should bring our troops home and stop policing this damn world of ours, Paulie.  Agreed to that!

And with all that wasted money saved we can actually start spending on much needed vital projects here in the States--or, maybe, give it back to the American taxpayer who it belongs to anyways!

:D

It's hard for me to concede your point when you didn't even make one. One flippant assumption isn't making a point.

New York is definitely in America, so saying "American police" in this case is perfectly cromulent.

I had meant to discuss, but it's so amusing to see you squirm.  Someone with character would concede an error;  but you, just look at you squirm.

I think the bigger problem is that some people view them as the good guys and some view them as the enemy. As long as that continues, we have a problem.

Terrible article by the way.

Nobody should feel like they should view the cops as the enemy. The bigger problem is actually more and more police who routinely terrify and bully citizens. We're hearing more stories now because of the internet and social media. Try being a woman and reporting a rape. Women just get ignored by police and brushed aside. Anyone who's not white is basically a target. None of this is new; the stories now are just spreading faster, and it's a good thing.
