12tone.

It's the 'Is it just me, or...' thread!

I guess I'll start:

Is it just me, or is Messiaen getting really popular suddenly?

No, it's not just you.

Is it just me, or is Karajan's voice really a pain to listen to?

I've never heard it.

Is it just me, or is salad dressing the worst thing you can do to already delicious vegetables? Here you have something nutritious and delicious, and you covered with white junk full of fat that just happens to taste as good as expired milk.

First of all : 2008 is Messiaen year. There will be a lot of Messiaen's music everywhere in concerthalls , radioprograms, new CD's etc. But I don't think he will be a popular composer ever.

Further:
Here is a good recipe for a classic dressing : ( keeps long in the fridge)

1 cup of olive oil ( or sunflower oil/ eventually a mix of both)
1/2 cup of good vinegar ( cider vinegar, white-wine vinager etc)
1 teaspoon each of sugar, salt, black pepper ( more/less to taste)
garlic to taste ( I use three cloves, finely crushed,of course)
2 teaspoons of mustard powder ( but plain mustard works aswll)
juice of 1 lime

Mix well.

Be creative with saladdressing : a quick mix of oil, lemonjuice, a dash of  dry sherry, some honey + spices works well

Use yoghurt or low fat, soft white cheese as a base, add some oil, spices, chopped herbs.

Do not buy stuff in a bottle that is loaded with SUGAR , gelatine,WATER, coloring and other funny stuff.

Or keep it really simple: make a large bowl of salad, squeeze the juice of half a lemon over it, pepper, salt, some oil. Rub the bowl with a large clove of garlic.

Methinks pjme adds the honey because he's got too great a proportion of vinegar to oil.  You don't need sugar or honey if you just increase the proportion of oil.  The classic proportion is 4 parts oil to one part vinegar, but I prefer a 5:1 ratio.  Furthermore, I use only olive oil and either balsamic or a flavored vinegar.  Those two things are all that is absolutely necessary.

But some add-ins are good.  pjme has listed some of the classic ones: garlic, lime juice (lemon juice is good, too), mustard powder.  I use a bit of powdered cloves, but not crushed ones, sometimes.  Skip the honey and sugar and salt.  Black pepper is good; I also like to add some sesame seeds.  Another good thing to do is to put just your vinegar and oil in a tall, narrow bottle, and then put a long stalk of tarragon in it for up to six months to let it steep, at room temperature.  Don't flake off the tarragon, keep it on the stalk.  It will impart a wonderful, herby flavor to the dressing.

Is it just me, or does all harmonically-derived music sound similar, like "the same old tonality"?

Is that why I'm listening to more Medieval music lately?

I remember seeing someone comment that he's met this often before, people who like early music and recent music but not the stuff in between because it's too predictable. It's true that I listen to very little of the stuff in between except for when I want something to just was over me, something easy and relaxing.

I always knew we had something in common, Mandryka, except you are more expert in the old stuff.

This penchant for melodic-based music: does it represent a higher intelligence, perhaps?  ;D

Definitely not just you. The striking similarity between Boccherini and Brahms has been already pointed out by Boethius.
