Finally my backyard, provincial orchestra playing Shostakovich's "Leningrad" symphony. The montages are quite annoying, but I attended this concert personally and it is the greatest orchestral performance I have witnessed live. What do you think of the playing standards?

Well, of course it was excellent. The MPO is, along with the HKPO and NHKSO, the three greatest orchestras in Asia IMO.

BTW, Malaysia my ass  :D. 90% of the orchestra is caucasian, one of the timpanists is African (how often do you see that?). I don't mean it in a prejudical way, just a very interesting observation because these are just simply uncommon within an Asian symphony orchestra.

I couldn't tell from the recording if it was up to world-class standards, but it sounds like a fine orchestra, certainly as good as or better than my local ensemble, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (in Denver). :D

Fantastic. Definitely up there with the large American orchestras. The level of playing across the world has become more uniformly high level due to players circulating internationally...there are really many more great players around in the world than there are orchestral positions!

Lovely hall and fine playing all around. Check out their other video too, which I found maybe even more impressive, of music from Star Wars, E.T. and The Planets. Great brass work!
