And, I do think that this is important, but don't know where else to post it:

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/pink-offers-cover-norwegian-women-s-beach-handball-team-fine-n1275013

Women have been fighting to be clothed in uniforms that they feel are comfortable, appropriate for the sport that they are playing, and are NOT overly sexualized.

You go Norway, Pink and Germany (for starters...there are more athletes, fighters and teams there from what I've seen going back in time....!).  We really should be past this by now.   >:(

PD

Important indeed!

Good for them, but I'd argue that the uniform they're happy with - tight boxer briefs and a sports bra - could also easily be seen as "sexualized", and if they really wanted to reduce sexual gaze they could just as easily play in baggy shorts and a baggy t-shirt.

Yuja Wang defending Woody Allen in Spanish? I don’t know. It’s supposed to be in there. Don’t quote me.

Today's inspirational Olympic story:

https://twitter.com/Olympics/status/1423815867670859787

"It’s never too late!

#AUS's Sinead Diver discovered #athletics aged 33. Today, she finished 10th in the Olympic women's marathon, aged 44.

What an inspiration. 🙌 "

Also, an American running her third marathon took the bronze, not far behind two Kenyans.

Wow!  :o  Amazing!  Great to hear a good story like this....particularly as I had earlier read this one about the German coach who was thrown out for punching a horse!  >:( :

Some good news at the Olympics equestrian events:  Jessica Springsteen and her two teammates won the silver for the USA in the team jumping final.  If that name sounds somewhat familiar, well if her dad were to sing a new version of an old classic, it might be called "Born to Jump".    ;D

Interesting story from the Olympic men's marathon:

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/olympics/2021/08/tokyo-olympics-french-marathon-runner-morhad-amdouni-accused-of-unbelievable-poor-sportsmanship-after-knocking-over-water-bottles.html

Incredibly poor sportsmanship or an unfortunate accident? Looks like the former to me.

If true, indeed sensational:

Archaeologists Claim They’ve Discovered the Trojan Horse in Turkey

https://greekreporter.com/2021/08/10/archaeologists-discover-trojan-horse-in-turkey/

But such news must be taken with a solid dose of salt. It will be very interesting, what the scholars say.

That would be extremely cool if true!

I saw this on the news recently.... Two new species of dinosaur have been discovered   8)

That's interesting too. For example, I hope they'll establish some day if, when, and which dinosaurs had coloured feathers; one wouldn't think that as necessary equipment for those sauropod giants, for sure. And whether that meteor on the Yucatan peninsula really destroyed so many species, or it was just one of several factors. Both questions have been debated a lot.

On the sad news front (heard yesterday):  Roger Federer is going in for his third knee surgery (on same knee) and will now not be playing yet another event--the US Open.  :( :'(  Now at age 40, perhaps it's time to retire?  He sounded hopeful though that he wanted to play again after his knee had healed.  As much as I'd love to see him play more, I'd rather that he not be in pain trying to keep up with his kids and then their grandkids.

Wishing him speedy healing and a full recovery,

PD

I had missed this news story (from August 9th), but ran across it today on CNN.  Had a good laugh at the tweets, etc.  Glad that they were able to repair it relatively quickly though I imagine that it probably was quite frustrating for those trying to get around by car in London that day!

The current professional consensus is that the Yucatan event was the single largest factor in the extinction of T-Rex & company. There were other ongoing  processes which were producing measurable effects, but which have been evaluated as survivable.

As before, I recommend Steven Brusatte's extraordinarily good The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs for enlightenment.

Help to the rescue!  :)  Great to see when people work together.

Hope that the person who fell is o.k.

I loved reading about dinosaurs when I was young.

I was just reading about dinosaurs a couple of days ago.

Wait, does that mean that I'm still young?  :-\ :D

It depends on if you still have toy dinosaurs that you still play with! 0:)
