Quote"Hitler was a nickname given to my business partner Manish Chandani's grandfather because of his strict nature. Frankly, till the time we applied for the trademark permission, I had only heard that Hitler was a strict man," Rajesh Shah who owns the shop told The Times of India daily.

"It was only recently that we read about Hitler on the internet," he added.

Of course, given that the shop's logo title incorporates a swastika, this is rather hard to swallow.

But I can't help feeling sorry for all those people called Hitler who had to change their name (though my guess is there are a few left in Austria ;) ). At least Stalin had the decency to use a made-up alias.

QuoteStrange Death of the English Gentleman

The idea of a gentleman was a more inclusive one than it sounds to modern ears. One of its greatest advantages was that you could define it so as to include yourself. You could behave like a gentleman, without possessing any of the social attributes which a gentleman might have: there was no need to possess a coat of arms, or a country estate, or engage in field sports, or wear evening dress. At least since Chaucer's time, there had been a distinction between the social meaning of the word, and the moral. It was evident that well-born people, who ought to know how to behave like gentlemen, did not always do so, while others sometimes did.

A review of the 1964 book Anti-Intellectualism in American Life:

I admit to a certain schadenfreude at how much worse things have grown since the book was written.

Governor Moonbeam, the master of the cash grab!  Now, were I less cynical, I might take umbrage at the idea that something can be both "state-run" and "private".  I might even find the use of negative option enrollment of private employees a bit irritating and heavy-handed.  But I fancy political shenanigans, and it is pretty much impossible to criticize Brown for his blatant dishonesty.  A 3% payroll tax, piggybacking on Social Security, is nothing more than a way to plug the actuary hole in CalPERS funding.  He gets huge sums of money, and can pretend like he's helping out at the same time.  The dude is brilliant.

There's also a disconnect between the historic level of Congressional unpopularity, and the fact that such a high percentage of incumbent Congressional boneheads handily won re-election.

I have a confession: I voted for a Republican in the 2012 election. The only reason I did is because this Republican is my Mom's boss at work and she speaks highly of him. My Mom, of course, is a Democrat, but she has said there are many Republicans she works with that she likes. Now, if only Obama and Speaker of the House, John Boehner can work together, than something may get accomplished, but it's not going to work if both parties aren't willing to work together.

Quote from: Scarpia on November 14, 2012, 08:45:06 AMIf we sum up all of the votes across all of the districts, Democrat candidates received more votes than Republican candidates.

True, but meaningless.  A more meaningful comparison would be to look at each state individually.  Gerrymandering is widespread, and if Republicans are perhaps better at it, let us not pretend that Democrats don't do the same thing.  The article strikes me as partisan whining.

Now, how to fix it?  I'd love to see non-partisan apportionment after the 2020 census.  How to get there?

Also, I must say that I'd be more concerned if this were new.  After all, the term gerrymandering is two hundred years old.
