there was a similar thread for bruckner but none for mahler... just wondering what people's favorite recordings are (i read the entire "mahler symphonies help" thread but aside from about 5-10 posts i couldn't really find the straightforward answers i was looking for so i apologize in advance for starting another mahler thread lol).

There are at least four Klemperer Mahler 2s out there. Phiharmonia, Concertgebouw, BRSO and another one that I can't quite remember. Vienna Symphony perhaps?

Hmmm. I haven't checked out the Szell 6th yet. The Klemperer 9th also sounds really good, though I really prize my Karajan 9th uber alles.

Be aware that Szell skips the repeat in the first movement.

Klemperer's 9th is an interesting one, with a superbly stoic finale.

You haven't missed much. Szell skips the repeat in the first movement, but for once, I don't care. Dull playing, indifferent interpretation and muddy sound. It's the least interesting and least played of my dozen or so Mahler Six recordings.

Andy, I think a little more highly of it  ;)

1.  Kubelik BRSO
2.  Rattle CBSO
3.  Tennstedt LPO
4.  Tennstedt LPO
5.  Barshai ...er..I'll get back to you..
6.  Karajan BPO
7.  Kubelik BRSO
8.  Horenstien LSO
9.  Tennstedt LPO and Chially RCO
10.  Kubelik BRSO

This is my list, but it is not complete.  For example, I can listen to Solti and the SCO doing a great 7th, etc, so I can never be sure.  One thing is for sure...I never liked Vaclav Neumann doing Mahler.

I'm not really fond of his Czech Phil cycle but his Gewandhaus Fifth is thrilling...my favorite Fifth (and I own 21 versions).

If you ever decide to start "Sarge's refusal helmet", or whatever, consider that box spoken for. ;D

Agreed re Neumann's Leipzig 5th though, that is really good. Haven't listened to it in years, will have to give it a spin, vaguely remember not being too keen on the sound, bright with extremly wide soundstage? Could be wrong though.

As for the list, since the old forum seem to be dead as dodo, yet another go probably won't hurt.

#1 Mitropoulos / Minneapolis (primitive sound and approximate playing don't bother me much on this), Walter / Columbia
#2 seem to like everything here lately
#3 Boulez / VPO, Neumann / CzPO
#4 Walter / NYP / Seefried (live '53)
#5 Walter / NYP, Bernstein / VPO, Chailly / RCO, Neumann / Leipzig
#6 Mitropoulos / Köln, Bernstein / VPO, Boulez / VPO, Abbado / BPO
#7 Scherchen / VSOO, Gielen / Baden-Baden, Sinopoli / Philharmonia, Abbado / CSO
#9 Walter / Columbia, Karajan / BPO (live), Bernstein / BPO
Das Lied von der Erde - Kmentt / Baker / Bavarian RSO / Kubelik (live), Lewis / Vermillion / Dresden / Sinopoli, King / Fischer-Dieskau / VPO / Bernstein
#10 Adagio Abbado / VPO

Forgot a lot probably.
