2. Dohnanyi Four Rhapsodies Op. 11
3. Schubert Arpeggione Sonata
4. Mozart Rondo in A Minor K511

Thanks a lot.

Thanks BorisG for the recommendation. I am playing these pieces for a recital and i have the Perahia recording which i am constantly amazed at the details. Have you heard of any very different interpretation of the Mendelssohn?

Leonard Rose for the Apeggione.  Really beautiful.  No, it's not "modern sound".

Yes, my favorite, the live 1975 Serkin available on BBC Legends. Compared to Perahia, more color, and clarity in both interpretation and recorded sound. It is also much better than Serkin's studio 1976 on Sony, which is more hurried and less colorful.  The 1963 pirate, I have not heard, but you would sacrifice sound on that.

Wonderful! Thanks Daverz, you made me dig up my cds as i recalled buying that and i realised i have not even opened it. Yes beautiful playing despite the sound. Have not heard of other versions so i couldnt compare though. Thanks a lot.

My choice:

1. Mendelssohn Prelude And Fugue Op. 35 No. 1   / Perahia
3. Schubert Arpeggione Sonata  / Rostropovitch, Britten
4. Mozart Rondo in A Minor K511  / Rudolf Serkin (1978)

My choice, too, if he is not worried about 1968. Good sound.
