Hi!

After 10 years of collecting recordings of violin concertos from the 20th century, I managed to launch a website to present my collection!
So please feel free to visit and see my collection at

This looks like a very useful reference site, especially as it has detailed information including average duration of the piece :) I don't know if you are looking for suggestions, but if you are I have a few:

Perhaps make the introduction page much shorter, and move a lot of what is on the main page to an "About this site" page on the menu, so that people don't need to scroll down to find the menu.

Also, will you have a "News" page? Regular visitors to the site will be interested in knowing what concertos have been recently added (and on what date), rather than looking through the whole list each time.

Thanks for your good suggestions! I will have to look when I can realize it, but your whole posting make sense. Thanks a lot!

And thank you also for your kind words about my site!

Great page! I'm bookmarking it.

It looks like every violin concerto is listed there. WOW.

violinconcerto

Thanks for bookmarking it!

Unfortunately not every violin concerto from 20th century is listed there - just those I own a recording of. And I am still missing several hundreds of concertos. But so fortunately the search never ends...  ;D

Why is Vieuxtemps (1820-1881, born in Belgium) in a 20th century collection?

violinconcerto

Because the introduction site says:

Quote(By the way: Don't be puzzled when you find recordings of violin concertos by Bach, Mozart or Vivaldi in my collection. I know they are not 20th century, but one cannot avoid getting these recordings while collecting violin concertos, because sometimes modern works are coupled with these works on commercial CDs. Although they are not my topic, I listed them as well for completeness.)

This fits for Vieuxtemps as well - so don't be puzzled.  ;)

Wow, Tobias, you have quite a collection there!   :o

I guess if I need to know about a violin concerto, I know where to look!  Congratulations--that must have taken a lot of time to assemble.

Hi Bruce,

thank you also for the kind words!
It took quite a while to gather all these recordings, you are right. In fact I am now collecting violin concertos for 10 years or so.
Unfortunately I am still missing a lot - but fortunately I still have a lot of time to get it  ;D

Don't you also need funding?

violinconcerto

One always need funding  ;D

All jokes apart I have to say that I am looking for extremely rare, but also extremely unpopular recordings and so normally get them for quite cheap money. The major problem isn't the money - the major problem is to find the recordings!

Tobias, great collection and nice site! Congratulations and keep up the good work!

I can contribute with a biographical information: the Romanian composer and conductor Emanuel Elenescu (b. 1911) died in 2003. You might want to update the refererence.
"Ja, sehr komisch, hahaha,
ist die Sache, hahaha,
drum verzeihn Sie, hahaha,
wenn ich lache, hahaha! "

violinconcerto

Thanks for the note about Elenescu! Of course I am interested in corrections or additional information of composer data and so I already changed the live dates!

Sir Toby: A nice reference site, even though your cyclopean obession with violin concertos (regardless of their quality) bewilders me still.
"Vivaldi didn't compose 500 concertos. He composed the same concerto 500 times" - Igor Stravinsky

"Mozart is a menace to musical progress, a relic of rituals that were losing relevance in his own time and are meaningless to ours." - Norman Lebrecht

Thank you all for the nice comments about my site!

By the way, I am always interested in trading recordings to increase the collection and so would be pleased if you drop me a line when you own a recording missing in my collection!

Thank you all so much!

One question, so many Hs and I didn't find Haydn??

Btw., why did you choose .de?  :o

violinconcerto

Hi!

My collection and so my site are dedicated to the 20th century violin concerto. OK, for completeness I also listed the Bach, Mozart, etc violin concertos in my collection, but they do not really count. Due to the fact that Haydn isn't from the 20th century and one of his violin concertos was never coupled on CD with anything I wanted, he is missing.

I choose .de, because I live in .de and thought it is as good as any other URL.

violinconcerto

Hello,

half a year is gone and my site is still running. In that time more than 200 hundreds new violin concertos were added and so if you want to take a second look I would be pleased.

Of course I am alwaye looking for new works, so if you can give hints on recordings I am missing, please let me know.

Thanks!
