I believe its Beethoven, or a variation of one of his works, from a slow movement of one of the sonatas. The melody heard in the opening seconds sounds so familiar, but I can't put my finger on it.

Me too. The thing is I have this on CD and I obviously ripped it, however this track was just lying alone without any information, in one of the old folders. Let me put another very familiar part, maybe that may ring a bell  ::)

Is the first clip you posted the very beginning of the track?

If so, I think its the slow movement from his Op. 22 Piano Sonata.

I'm listening to that sonata now. I don't see the theme from the first clip.

Hmm. I just went through all of LvB's 32 PS slow movements and I found no match, assuming that the very first clip is the opening of the movement.

Now I think it might be Schubert.

Orbital, if the first clip is not the beginning of the movement, perhaps you could put up the first 30 seconds as a reference?

it is the first 30 seconds. Sorry I can't put longer clips as the size limit is 500 kb's. I can break it down if that would help. These two sections are the most recognizable ones though. The whole track is exactly 3 minutes  :)

Then its definitely not Op. 22.  :-\

Yep, I listened to it right away. Probably the chords ticked you off to think that it was. It does have a Beethoven-ian ring to it though

It's Wilhelm Kempff's transcription of Orpheus' Lament from Gluck's opera "Orphée et Euridice".

Probably played by him as well... ;D
