He was born in February 1013 and as far as I know is the earliest named composer whose work survives- if only a few monophonic pieces. His birth and death dates and in fact much else about his life are known, but the 950th anniversary of his death (1054) in 2004 passed unnoticed. The next earliest name I think is Peter Abelard.

Yes, and let's not forget Odo of Arezzo, who was born in the 900's ........

Sean

Okay, I know a bit about the surviving Greek fragments, and also there's St Ambrose c340-97 who may have composed a few attributable lines, but I hadn't heard of Odo of Arezzo...

Sean,

There's also Odo of Cluny (b. 878), who composed twelve choral antiphons in honour of St Martin of Tours.

We also should note Kassia.  Approximately fifty of Kassia's (b. 805/810) hymns have survived and twenty-three are included in Orthodox Church liturgical books.  What more could one want?

Sean

Extraordinary list there. Extant and attributable stuff from at least the 9th and 10th centuries- would be extremely interesting to get hold of recordings.
