I'm pretty certain this isn't normal, but i just wanted to check.

It's a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 and the high pitched noise is present when the unit is turned on or off.

Any ideas or is it just defective?

I would try an inexpensive filter on my incoming power. If that doesn't work, take it back, something is wrong! At least you can eliminate the possibility that it is on your power. Like, do you have any fluorescent lights? Or does it come and go when the refrigerator motor (or any other motor) turns on/off? I know, that's basic stuff, and something like a DVR should already be shielded, but maybe the interference is too much for this particular unit. :-\

I read a bunch of reviews of DVR's online and the overwhelming consensus is that they are poorly made. I just called the cable company and they said they will come Monday with yet another (will be my thrid in two weeks) player. The first one wasn't recording properly.  :-[

I swear, this noise is driving me up a wall.

Some say the view is good from up there... ;D

Sounds like a category that I will be giving a miss to for a while... :-\
