The Gielen Mahler is very pricey -- probably because they paid David Hurwitz to write the booklet >:D
They did? Because he wrote the review, too. Of course, some MusicWeb people do the same thing, and one New York Times critic plagiarized the liner notes in his review last December (at least, according to a conversation Hurwitz had with me).

Wait, wait, you know Hurwitz in person? :o Can you punch him for me, or- ? ;D

More seriously, it's a shame that the Gielen Mahler cycle isn't available on that sale. But his Brahms cycle is very interesting, and Norrington's Beethoven cycle (that Brian alerted me to) is quite excellent indeed.

Also Gielen's Bruckner 3rd, if you want a more analytical take on the symphony. :)

Here are two more Hänssler cds I love -- and a big thanks to Hänssler for single-handedly  reviving the music of Koechlin.

yes, yes yes!!! How could I forget those?

Perhaps Brian could punish me by sending me adware?

I've picked up most of my 'small' Hanssler collection from the BMG Music Club (for some reason that label is one offered) - as a result the collection is rather eclectic, but I've enjoyed all the discs:

Bach, CPE - Magnificat w/ Rilling-Stuttgart
Bach, JS - Cantatas (202,208,211-2) w/ Rilling
Czerny, Carl - Symphonies 2/6 w/ Nowak-SWR
Grandval, Clemence - Oboe Works w/ Lencses
Held, Joachim - German Lute Music
Held, Joachim - Renaissance Lute Music
Koechlin, Charles - Clarinet Works w/ Altmann
Koechlin, Charles - Flute Chamber w/ Ruhland
Linos Harp Quintet - French Harp/Flute Music
Schubert, Franz - Symphony 1/2 w/ Rilling
Schubert, Franz - Symphony 3/4 w/ Rilling
Telemann, GP - Cantatas, Festive w/ Stotzel

Actually not so surprising when you consider that the club was sold by Sony to Universal...

I'm currently perusing the BRO Hanssler offerings - there are two 4-CD sets of Bach Cantatas w/ Rilling - I have a couple of discs of him in this repertoire - but just wondering if these are good renditions?  The price, i.e. $16 per set, certainly can't be beat! Any comments? Thanks all -  :D

I like Profil's (Hanssler's) Bruckner 4 & 9 conducted by Wand. Two separate recordings.

I forgot that Profil was linked with this label... the Haitink Bruckner 6th sounds gorgeous.

Here are some more Profil releases that are good:

Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life. - Ludwig van Beethoven

The Sibelidavis has my approval.  :)

EDIT: Though I have only heard it once, and only the Symphony.

Believe it or not, I have not a single disc of that label! :o

Same here Harry. It's an uninteresting label.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

With over 600 recordings in circulation, there must be a few Hanssler discs that interest you.  No?

Excuse me, but bullshit.

Well, I never said that it is a uninteresting label.
Still have not one cd of that label in my collection, but I have no doubt that one of these days......

No you didn't, 71 dB did. And I don't find it the most exciting of labels myself but with  600 discs in the catalogue there are bound to be gems..

The Koechlin series is very fine with some unique recordings. Perhaps Hansslers most essential discs.

I've found a vcery interesting Kondrashin live Shostakovich 15 in their Profil series, and there re more fine live stuff in that series.

Hänssler is an uninteresting label in the sense it does not offer (according to Cataloque 2002) much repertoire other label's don't. I don't see what is the strength of this label? In what field does it try to be better than other labels?

I have to say I am not fond of Hänssler's cover art (text written in "random" font style "howering" over a background painting/photo) either in most cases...  :P
