Hartmann's discography (in the US, at least) seems to be a bit paltry. Anyone have any suggestions?

i believe there are lots of Hartmann's music on naxosmusiclibrary.com

Err, I meant CDs. Some specific discs/recordings, etc.

There was a KA Hartmann thread a few weeks back.  I'll let someone else deal with the crappy forum search engine  :-*

I recommend the Leitner recording of Symphony No. 6, and the Kubelik studio recordings of 4 & 8 on DG (these are also in the Original Masters Kubelik box).

MahlerTitan, what do you think of the JPE Hartmann symphonies?

Oh, but this is amusing!

No doubt, Naxos has the entire back catalogue of the 19th-c. Danish composer Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann (1805-1900).  And, no, I'll thank you very much not to feed me that  8)

I immediately took the OP as referring to 20th-c. Munich composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1905-1963), whose discography is indeed disappointingly and undeservedly slight.

But, I guess this particular question remains as yet unresolved . . . ?

Slacker!  8)

Actually, the GMG search engine turned these up for me with ease.  Both started by Harry, BTW.

Hartmann, complete symphonies, which box to buy?

Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Recommendations.

You might ask why Harry felt he needed to start two threads with such similar aims.  But you must address that sensible query to Harry  0:)

Ahaa, thank you. Pardon my ignorance, but I didn't realize there were so many Hartmanns!

probably the most exciting recording I've heard

Yes, there was the whole Danish Hartmann composing clan.  I don't believe KA Hartmann was related to them.

Or did you mean this Hartmann?

Hartmann Symphonies Nos. 1-8

The Metzmacher recordings linked are indeed good.  I have the original issues rather than the box, which has the advantage of including a lot of "fillers" from other composers which are often equally interesting.  One symphony which I particularly enjoyed (can't recall which number) sort of has the feel of an borderline atonal version of a baroque concerto grosso.

I'll reiterate what I said before: I tend to prefer the performances that I've heard on the Wergo set to that on the Metzmacher one, though if you want modern sound Metzmacher is a must.

The Wergo set is Kubelik in 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8, Rieger in 1, Leitner in 3 and Macal in 7.

I've just acquired Leitner in 6. After one listen I don't see it as being any superior to Kubelik or Fricsay, but I reserve the right to change my mind.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."
