Sad indeed. One of the greatest writers on music - his completely original and insightful way of thinking really influenced me more than any other single musicologist. I've been dreading this day - he seemed to have been around for such a long time (I have articles by him written in the 30s, I think). I shall put on a CD of his Opus Alchymicum now...

Personally, I found his book on RVW a wee bit pretentious.  $:)

But theres a great quote of his  in that obituary:

Quote"A limitless plurality of values is indistinguishable from no values at all".

A succinct condemnation of today's "you're ok, I'm ok" society.
"Vivaldi didn't compose 500 concertos. He composed the same concerto 500 times" - Igor Stravinsky

"Mozart is a menace to musical progress, a relic of rituals that were losing relevance in his own time and are meaningless to ours." - Norman Lebrecht

Thanks for the link, sound67. (Mellers married for a third time in 1987, when he must have been 73!)
