Alexei Machavariani is yet another rarely performed Soviet composer. The only work I knew from him was his Violin Concerto, but thanks to YouTube some of his other compositions have recently surfaced. For a Soviet composer, his orchestration and harmonies are rather daring. I don't know how he escaped the socialist realist ban, or whether he did or not...
I like his music. Some of it has a bit of mysticism in it, some are pretty straightforward soviet-style works. It's a refreshing listen all the same.

Anyway, check out his original Symphony here:

Note varaibel spelling, with 't' or without.

I found his symphonies 1, 2 and 4 on YouTube. 1 and 4 did not especially impress me, to be honest. 2 was more interesting...

I think he wrote 4 to develop something like a neoclassical style. I admit it's not very successful. He also seems to borrow from Khachaturian too much in some of his other works, especially his violin concerto...  but the 2nd symphony is pretty original.
