Well, I favor Miles Davis from the 1950s (have some earlier recordings, but not much into his 'later' periods, but that's me, I guess); just to pick 5 out of the nearly dozen that I own:

Round About Midnight, 1955-56
Miles Ahead, 1957
Porgy & Bess, 1958
Kind of Blue, 1959
Sketches of Spain, 1959

There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

The Cellar Door deserves mention. The more I listen the more I'm amazed not only at Miles' chops but also Jarrett's (on electric piano).

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

One of the benefits of my new commute is that I've been listening to quite a bit of jazz lately, and Miles in particular.  I'm still exploring a lot of his music for the first time -- truly wonderful stuff.  My current top 5:

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.
