I want to know more about popular music before I was born, where should I start? I don't know anything about the Beetles... :D What are some particular songs that you love?

Harry

Begin with ABBA my friend, great fun for young minds. ;D

Also one of my favorites.  Get some Byrds discs and take some of that San Diego weed.

The Big Bands, dude!  Glenn Miller, the Dorseys, Benny Goodman, etc.

The 1920's offer Bix Beiderbecke, Paul Whiteman: Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong span decades of course.

I listened to big band jazz before classical. I just could never find consistently good songs. Thanks for the website!

Louis Armstrong is the most important figure - get the Hot Fives & Sevens recordings from the 20's and the 1950's recordings of WC Handy

If you think about it, what denotes Western Popular music from the 1920's to the present (and has created much of the separation from the classical tradition) is that it has all been Africanized to one extent or another.  Louis is the person most responsible for this.

Is that Louis Armstrong?

I got a gal who's always late
Any time we have a date
But I love her
Yes I love her

I'm gonna walk right up to her gate
And see if I can get it straight
'Cause I want her
I'm gonna ask her

Is you is or is you ain't my baby
Way you're acting lately makes me doubt
Youse is still my baby, baby
Seems my flame in your heart's done gone out

A woman is a creature that has always been strange
Just when you're sure of what you'll find
She's gone and made a change

Is you is or is you ain't my baby
Maybe baby's found somebody new
Or is my baby still my baby true

Is you is or is you ain't my baby
Maybe baby's found somebody new
Or is my baby still my baby true

Obviously true...you don't even know how to spell the band's name  ;)

There must be an oldies or classic rock radio station where you live. Check that out first.

Harry was joking about ABBA but really, they were huge and they created some of the most perfect pop songs ever penned.

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Hippie (notice the spelling...or was that again deliberate?  ;D ) songs? You came to the right place. I was a hippie before I was a soldier...actually, I've always remained one and have long grey hair now to prove it  :)  I'll make a list of songs for you. Give me a few minutes.

shhhhhh
I'm a bad speller but when corrected I have enough wit to make it look deliberate  ;) Just don't tell anyone   ;D

I don't know if many will agree (btw I'm as old as you Mozart), but check out some Bowie (ie. Hunky Dory, Scary Monsters, Low, Heroes...) Worth a try. Also, Allman bros.
