Hello,

I was wondering whether or not anyone else here is having problems with YouTube?  I noticed, starting yesterday I believe, that when I try and do a search in YT's engine, that it doesn't work.  I'm using Safari and an older OS system (computer is getting old alas).  I can watch things on there if I try and do the search outside of there but not if I try to narrow things down on their website.

Yesterday, I tried an experiment and downloaded GoogleChrome and using that I can do searches on YT's website.

Youtube keeps changing things all the time and yes, older browsers can have problems. Most of the time the changes are really small and cosmetic in nature, but it can created nasty problems nevertheless. I use a cheap Sony Blu-ray player to watch Youtube on my old TV (that used to be able to show Youtube years ago, but is now too old for that) and Youtube has been acting very weirdly recently. For older computers/operating systems I recommend legacy browsers (one can search for one depending on their situation).
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

I keep Chrome on my Mac for such situations, although I prefer to avoid Chrome, since it is a component of google's spyware system. Apple does issue updated Safari releases even for some older version of MacOS, so there might be a Safari update that would help.

What is a legacy browser?

Yes, I was hoping to avoid installing Chrome and am currently just trying to use it for YT at the moment.  I'm hoping that Apple will do a Safari update too.  I'm regularly checking to see if they have released one.  I do realize, however, that my Macs are old.  Eventually, I'll have to get a new one.  :(

a "legacy browser" is an app that has died off, or an old version of a current browser
dead app = Firebird browser
old version of a browser that will not operate in the modern world = Safari 5

"I keep hoping Apple will ... " HA HA HA HA!  No, Apple will not go back to Snow Leopard or Sierra and create a version of Safari for those legacy OS's that is compatible with today's web browsers.  I think you forget who is running the company now.  Not exactly a customer-friendly attitude.

You can also try Firefox for Mac. What version of MacOS are you running? I'm currently using a Mac from 2013 which can't update beyond Big Sur (11.7.1) and I'm still getting Safari and OS updates and YouTube works ok.

Not anymore.  Ventura is out, which means only Monterey will get security and Safari updates - Apple only supports one back-release beyond the current OS.

You are running a 32-bit OS.
If you purchase a new Apple computer, you will be thrust into the 64-bit world.  Prepare for hurt.
Quicktime Pro (and all of its wonderful libraries) will not run.  If you use it, you will not believe what a pain this will be in your backside.  There is nothing in the 64-bit world even remotely like it, even for $80 USD and higher applications.
Great apps like Tex-Edit Pro - dead, and the developer will not conform to Apple's 64-bit mandate for apps.
Microsoft Office since version 2008 looks and operates like absolute bullocks.  The days of the "Mac version" with its Aqua-designed interface are over.
And you cannot run anything 32-bit in emulation - won't run.  Period.
Text-Wrangler - a superb and FREE application - will no longer run.  You must buy the much-less useful BBEdit.  Ugh.

Look at OWC (Macsales dot com) and find a Mac that will still run High Sierra, or earlier.  You will not enjoy the 64-bit world Apple has created with the abandonware floating like debris of a torpedoed Russian nuclear cruiser* all around you ....  either that, or join the Hackintosh world and see if you can live like that.

*alternatively, Florestan's speedboat

Historically Apple supports a MacOS version for 3 years from it's initial release, which would give us one more year for Big Sur support.

Um, for several years now Apple has only issued Security Updates for the first back-release since the current OS.
This is not Steve and Avi and Larry's Apple - this is Steve Cook, Lucifer's agent, running the company.

MacOS Catalina got it's last release a few months ago, which works out to ~3 years after initial release. So the pattern continues to be that support lasts 3 years after initial release, which would put Big Sur support end about a year from now. My MacBook will be 10 years old by then, and I can't say I haven't gotten a fair amount of use out of it.

I used to use Firefox (many years ago on a Windows PC).  When I checked out GC, I at least had the minimum requirements there.  And my Macs are older than yours (alas!).

And thanks everyone!

If you're not getting Safari updates you might be better off with Chrome, from a security point of view.

Thank you for the suggestion.  In the interim, I called and spoke to someone at Apple who seemed to think that I was still in good shape...who knows though?  I do also use Malware Bytes and try and be careful what I click on (though not perfect).
