We've all called ourselves Dave one time or another.

I read over the "allergic to religion" part a little too fast.  If you're pretty sure you'd have a severe allergic reaction going to the whatever, then it's no good going.  Maybe just explaining about the allergy would work.  So it's not really about religion, it's just about you and your allergy.  Hey, my brother is that way about cats--if he spends more than a couple of minutes in a room with one, his eyes start to swell shut.  Even kids can understand that!

Good thought. Sometimes the personal price paid in order to do something can be out of all proportion to the good it might do. What's reasonable to ask A to do can be a nightmare for B.

I found out today that this guy who was in my class a year ago (and was my age) was shot and killed recently. The story was that he was stealing lawn equipment from a shed and the guy thought he was breaking into his house, but since both him and the guy who shot him were drug dealers, I somehow doubt it. Not to mention that his girlfriend, who also has a drug problem (used to see her wait outside of class all the time for him) is pregnant now.

All I can say:

What a distressing story, Greg.  You are too young to see your peers dying, and it's hard for me to imagine the feeling of learning that someone I have known has been shot to death.  It was especially sad to note that this young man's son was born 6 weeks before the shooting.  If in fact both men were involved in the drug trade, I'm sure there was more to the story than the official version.  A sad story all the way around.   :(

greg

Well, it wasn't as bad as it could've been for me, since he used to sit in front of me and I didn't really talk to him much, although I remember him being a good guy (at least when he wasn't asleep or drawing private parts in Paint when everyone could see them :D ).

For my friend, though... I could understand why she was so bothered by it. They were closer than I thought- just yesterday I had found out that he asked her out 5 or 6 times and said he'd leave his girlfriend for her, but she said no each time, since dating a drug dealer is obviously not a good idea.  ::) (This girl has a very strange history of the men in her life dying, I mean, to where it seems statistically nearly impossible... what was it, 3 ex-boyfriends, dad, and this guy)  ???

If you thought the Nobel for Obama was bad, then check this out: a former laureate is backing, along with a tech. magazine, the Internet for the 2010 award.

That brings to mind a friend of mine from school having an old lady in Greece ask him where Mrs. Vodafone's shop is.

I almost thought that was the fat kid from Superbad for a second... glad it wasn't.
Though I do agree with him (i see what he's talking about all the time)...

Most amusingly, the Russians in my life have decided they want to have a "Super Bowl party" entre nous this evening.  I've ordered a plate of nachos which I shall pick up on the way home from the MFA this afternoon (on-line ordering is such fun);  and Maria was even in the mood to fetch in some beer (Ipswich I.P.A.).  Of course, the girls actually have a project they want to get work done on tonight;  so I suspect we'll probably watch for about half an hour ; )

I think there was one point where he actually spoke three consecutive words without an f-bomb. It might have been a somewhat amusing story if he had a vocabulary.

Karl, "Super Bowl Party" and "entre nous" are words that just shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

As my music attests, Tony, I am a man of dangerous juxtapositions ; )

Actually fits in nicely.

You know, it's the darnedest thing.  I have no trouble keeping Beethoven and Brahms distinct . . . yet I am confusing Ray & Dave all the time, with their Brahmsian and Beethovenian IDs.

This is not any call for change.  Just noting a glitch in my neural processing.

It's been a couple of weeks, yet occasionally I am shocked to note "Ray"* recommending a CD of music for viol consort written in the 1650s.
