On the other hand, one of the things I like most about GMG is that it's an endless font of mirth -- especially for those who love irony.

Come heed my lay, all ye lovers of Harmony & Irony!

Kristen Stewart is highest paid female film star in the world

Star of Twilight Saga made an estimated $34.5m last year, according to Forbes magazine

First thought: Who is Kristen Stewart?
Second thought: I'm definitely in the wrong business!

Wrong gender, too, apparently  ;D

Last night I watched the first episode of Stephen Fry's 100 Greatest Gadgets. Some of the choices were, well, less than great:

  • Remote controlled toy cars
  • Soda Stream (remember those ads?)
  • Sandwich maker (AKA Breville; I always hated these)
  • Patio heater (those gas-powered standing lamp-like things some cafes and pubs have)
  • Electric toothbrush (perhaps I'll appreciate it when I'm elderly?)
  • Baby buggy (as distinct from pram)

can you "quit" cold turkey?  :P
Didn't have a choice for the last week, having only about 10 minutes of Internet twice, using public places.
I couldn't quit because I need the internet now for studying, but if I didn't need it for that, I wouldn't quit anyways, so no, I couldn't. The internet is the greatest source of learning that has ever existed in the history of the world, so it would be illogical to try unless you tried just to see if you could.  :o

Brrrrrraaaaapppp!  Wrong answer!  The internet is the greatest medium for transmission of information in history, but it's also the greatest repository for dangerously ignorant bullshit, and the latter outweighs the former 99 to 1!

That's why you ignore the stupid stuff. I guess some people don't do that, though.
You can go to the biggest library in the world, but online you'll find most of the same books. Most books out there are floating around in pdf form... and that's just books...

It is by far the greatest research for anything major I've ever really wanted to learn, which is why I said that. Languages, computer programming, music...

An essential component of my Master's in Research was using the internet for proper research and knowing where to look to find the good stuff, and I can happily agree with you: while I would love to spend all the rest of my life reading texts from the 1600s/1700s in the rare books room of the British Library, they are ALL online now.

Started the fun task of cataloguing my CDs, and just realized that I own more Haydn discs than any other composer. Counting each disc, including each in the box sets, I now have 119, and I do have quite a few MP3s of Haydn, but that 119 is just physical discs. It's quite a shock, I truly had no idea I owned that many.  :o

Next is Prokofiev with 79 discs, and probably another dozen or so on MP3.

The problem is knowing which is the stupid stuff. An awful lot of people can't tell. We tend to mistake ignorant BS that coincides with our own prejudices for valid information . . . and to dismiss rational investigation of facts that threatens our pet beliefs as BS.

It's a very rare person who can learn to distinguish them without hands on guidance. Our ability to correct ourselves -- and thus learn -- from within the closed system of our own limited understanding is pretty slight.
