Jochanaan, one remaining subtopic. Do you think Kagel's sees it that way? Why do you think that?
I think he might, since according to one of the interviews you linked to, he's also written "absolute music" and "anti-theatrical" music.  He must be aware, as any composer for theater, film, television etc. would be, of the inherent contradictions and possibilities in the blending of music and theater.

Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)

Thank you, Karl.  I couldn't find the exact quote during a quick search. 8)

Then it gets creepy for the discussion companion. What to do now?
Retire and contemplate the discussion, perhaps?  As I intend to. :)

What he gets for being irritable, I suppose.

It baffles me that you call it a common term; this is the first I have ever seen the phrase "instrumental theatre."

So, no, I have not the faintest idea what you mean, mijn vriend.

Could this be it?

Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence in their opinions and lives that they have heard it.  ~ Henry David Thoreau

Maybe my terminology is not specific, but I got the concept from the articles you linked us to...
