It should be made clear that M's new toy has the old Mac OS, which was well past it even when that machine was new.  For the last 8 years or so, Macs have used a completely different and much more sophisticated OS, OS X,  based on BSD unix by way of the NeXt operating system.  They've  also used Intel processors for the last couple years, so you can dual boot XP or Vista.

I think it might be possible to install OS X on that G3 (though maybe older versions;  I wouldn't rush out to buy Leopard to try it).  You could also install Linux (e.g. Yellow Dog) on it.

Really? So you can run OS X and XP on the same machine? Only on Macs, or also on PCs?

Yeah, I dual boot XP/OS X on my Macbook.  Leopard makes this easy.  There is also software that lets you run windows or linux on a virtual machine from within OS X.

As for PCs running OS X: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41Z0FJYBd5U
