Quote from: Jo498 on May 27, 2024, 10:15:05 AMJacob's Preludes, Estampes, Images were on cheapish Teldec/Ultima/Apex? CDs. Originally Nonesuch recordings from the late 1970s but the CDs were commonly available and should be easily findable used.
There's also the complete? Schönberg solo piano but I don't have that disc.

I was just looking for a clip of his Waldstein to show you, I couldn't find one, but here's the Arbiter web page

https://arbiterrecords.org/catalog/paul-jacobs-in-recital/

It starts with something really true -- "In concert, Paul Jacobs unleashed a volatile side that was merely hinted at in his meticulous studio recordings." You can hear that side of him in the En Blanc Et Noir. I'd always put it down to his reaction to his imminent death, but maybe it's just how he always was in concert, even before he received his diagnosis.

I've heard good things about Freire's Chopin and have been keeping an eye out for them.  I did once run across an album of some of his recordings, but alas it was in too bad of shape.

Quote from: Atriod on May 27, 2024, 03:24:58 AMI like Zimerman's crystalline interpretations, a unique take. Moravec would have likely made some part of my list if he recorded more of them. Same with Russell Sherman (Estampes and Book II Images among the best I heard).

And I forgot about Paul Jacobs, he has now been added to my list.

Have you heard Iren Marek? Two CDs on Arbiter. I'm listening to some of her Debussy now and I am really impressed.

Quote from: Atriod on May 25, 2024, 11:08:15 AMAfter several plays with some gap inbetween them to make sure my initial impression was not rushed, Gianluca Cascioli's cycle of the Preludes have made my absolute favorites for this cycle (top notch in the rest of the works as well). They are interesting interpretations; he doesn't completely go down the school of Michelangeli route with an ethereal, dreamy aesthetic. It reminds me of the old style French pianists.

I must say it took a few tries, I'm not sure why, probably just my mood - but now, I can fully understand why you're so excited about Cascioli's Debussy. Thanks for pointing it out to me.

The preludes were also released in a DG Galleria budget CD (which is the one I have, and if IIRC it wasn't easy to get hold of either). Unfortunately, it does not include the other works on the Japanese release.

And unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available to stream or purchase as a download. :(

Mine is a CD.

Quote from: ritter on June 25, 2024, 11:16:42 AMWell, that adds up to slightly above $5 per prelude... A steal!  ;D

The street food in Singapore has gone up since I was last here, so not too bad indeed!
