Which one would you recommend? He's coming over here to perform Brahms 2 in December and can't wait to get him sign it.

I rather enjoy his recording of Albéniz works.  He's made many others, maybe some of music more to your taste.

he has recorded so much, and I do not claim to know the half of his recorded repertoire, but these two -if for nothing else but the diversity- are excellent.

His recent Haydn sonatas twofer is possibly the best thing he's done (or rather that I've heard from him), and his Dukas/Decaux disc is also superb.

Well, I would recommended his Alkan recordings(especially Grande Sonate or Concerto for solo piano) or his recording of Rzewski's The People United Will Never Be Defeated.  ;)

I've almost everything he recorded. If you want a single CD, I'd recommend either of these two:

For a set, look no further than this:

This is possibly the best thing he's done and that's no small praise.

All good choices.  The Wigmore Hall recital is particularly good as a cross-section of his interests.  I'd also add Kaleidoscope (his disc of miniatures) and the Roslavets disc below.

I also second (or fourth, by now) the Wigmore Hall recital disk.

He is not a "Jazzer" Not here, nore with Kapustin!

His Godowsky Chopin Studies are great! As well his other Godowsky recordings.

Josquin des Prez

I found most Hamelin's cds to be lack luster, but then again, so is a lot of the music he choses to record. I can't for the life of me figure out why it's always the most virtuoso musicians that have the least musical sense.

Yes, I have that -- I don't have any other recordings of those pieces as terms of comparison, but having said that I have no complaints. Hamelin's virtuosity suits those works' insouciance and extrovert nature.

I have at least one other version of the First Piano Concerto, with Ronald Brautigam and Chailly conducting, and although it's excellent, Hamelin might be just a hair more exciting.  Hamelin's CD also includes the Second Piano Concerto (1966) by Rodion Shchedrin, a fascinating piece that incorporates some jazz elements.

Hamelin playing the Medtner's complete piano sonatas is another great disc to get. Expensive though.

I have heard a lot of Medtner but would suggest his Medtner recording st to everyone.

His Shostakovich piano concerto disc is a very fine recording including a brilliant shechedrin PC.

As well his Alkan, a composer I relly like, is good. (The Osborne one is BTW the one I love)  ;D

Haven't been any posts in this thread in nearly 13 years. Which of his post-2008 recordings do you recommend? I do have the Reger disc mentioned above, but would be interested in listening to more of his recordings, especially some of the more modern composers. The Medtner set has been sitting on my Amazon wish list forever!

How do you rank Hamelin in the pantheon of 20th/21st century pianists?
