I am looking for some recommendations on Copland's non-populist works. I really want to find some good choral works but all in all i want to take a good plunge into the avant garde side of Copland. Any ideas on good recordings or collections??

Concerto for Piano and Orchestra
Orchestral Variations
Short Symphony (Symphony No. 2)
Symphonic Ode

Absolutely superb.  Samples here:

There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Seconded!

Thirded! The Symphonic Ode is one of my favourite works by Copland. You could also try the Sextet (Warner/Apex CD) and the Organ Symphony (numerous recordings but Bernstein/E Power-Biggs is very good.)

The CD below is good, containing all great works. The Red Pony is more populist however:

"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Yeah i was looking at this CD. Isn't "M.T.T." a Copland expert of sorts?

Yes, I think so. There is a picture of him with Copland in the CD I think.
