Well it's hardly proof, is it?

but

I'll take it on trust.

;D
Thanks, Luke! I'll be sure to put the Sonata Erotica on my car stereo, full volume, windows rolled down, by large groups of people. In the church parking lot, too.

I chose Beethoven Op 69. Also bought Navarra's Arpeggione Sonata recently on Calliope - seems to rival Rostro's version with Britten.

I heard that the Alkan's a fine piece. Care to elaborate?

For me, JS Bach all the way (esp. when perf. by Gould/Rose Sony).

I'm surprised that these Bach sonatas are identified as Cello Sonatas.  Although they have been played and recorded on viola as well as cello, they are rightly sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord.

Just tell them it's Art.
Ha....... listened to them today. Errrrrrr....... if i wanted to hear sex sonatas, i think i'd rather listen to Scriabin.  8)

Archaic Torso of Apollo

The poll leaves out my favorites - Carter and the 3 by Martinu. (Not that I've heard enough cello sonatas to really know what I'm talking about)
formerly VELIMIR (before that, Spitvalve)

"Who knows not strict counterpoint, lives and dies an ignoramus" - CPE Bach

Archaic Torso of Apollo

Forgot to mention another one that I like - Silvestrov's. Available on the ECM disc called leggiero, pesante. Some sounds I didn't know a cello could make!  :o

Guido

That is certainly one I haven't heard - sounds very exciting - Every work of his that I have heard before I have loved... will have to look into that.

The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away

Where is Johann Nepomuk Hummel op 104 sonata?
It was an inspiration for Brahms to compose his sonatas...
