Der lächelnde Schatten

Quote from: Hitch on May 20, 2025, 09:15:25 AMThis enlightening thread has done what I hoped it would: satisfy my curiosity about Delius's music. From knowing nothing about his compositions, I now enjoy exploring them. The relatively obscure (even in this thread) Marche Caprice is short and sweet; a good introduction to Delius's world. The Florida Suite is a particular favourite.

Recent listening:

Florida Suite (RPO/Beecham)
Marche Caprice (RSNO/David Lloyd-Jones)
Legende (BBC Philharmonic/Davis)
The Song of the High Hills (BBCSO/Davis)
On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring (ASMF/Marriner)
Koanga, Act 2: La Calinda (ASMF/Marriner)

Great to read! From this particular list, The Song of the High Hills and On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring are favorites. Aside from those two works, do try and give a listen to Sea Drift, Brigg Fair, Appalachia, Paris: A Song of the Great City, In a Summer Garden, all of the concerti, the three Violin Sonatas, A Mass of Life, Requiem, Songs of Sunset, Songs of Farewell, the complete Hassan and the opera A Village Romeo & Juliet (where the famous intermezzo The Walk to the Paradise Garden comes from). For this listener, these are the works that made me a Delius fan.

To the list above, I'd also recommend North Country Sketches (such a lovely and evocative piece), the Piano Concerto and the mature String Quartet.
Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Ah, I forgot about North Country Sketches. Love this piece. The SQ is also excellent.
