Great recording. Watchorn sounds more flexible and relaxed than usual, and certainly his approach is more cantabile than in the English Suites. Beautiful instrument and sound quality, too.  :)

:-* Amazing music.

By the way, Ilaria, I don't know if you saw my message or not, but what do you think of Neumann's Martinu so far?

The Hyperion recording has been highly recommended to me by Harry.
And let me chime in there. Great disc!

Again, Sarge, or was't a typo for the Fifth?

Indeed! ;D

I saw the message, sorry for not having answered immediately; the set is really beautiful and impressive, Neumann seems to be completely inside Martinu's music, and the Czech Philharmonic is absolutely superb! Yesterday I listened to the first two symphonies in a row, and No.3 this morning; I'm looking forward to having a listen to the rest of the set too.
Thank you for suggesting me it! :)

I'm listening to the Mandelring's cycle in the order the quartets are presented on disc. Disc 1 has 1, 2 and 4. After I listened to the Fourth Quartet this afternoon, I moved on to disc 2 which has 3, 6 and 8. The Fifth Quartet is on disc 3.

[L. Nielsen] Does this mean I've found yet another c. 1900 sort of German sort of late Romantic featured on CPO composer?  They've been showing up with alarming frequency lately (alarming to my checkbook, not my ears, to be precise).   Is this one worth investigating?

I found his second symphony on DaCapo super impressive. A little too early to have the "spice" that we have come to enjoy with post-late romantic composers like Atterberg, Bax, etc - but for music that breaks no moulds it's quite lovely.

Yes, it is very good, although I don't own any other recordings. The EMI box isn't coming yet, either, since there seems to be some trouble with Amazon and my bank account.
