Alkan is indeed an extraordinary composer. I second the Lewenthal suggestion and offer three more recommendations:

For more info, he has his own thread and everything.

Thank you for these recommendations. I think my dad has the Hamelin and the Gibbons, but not sure about the other one. Will search for it, thank you again!

And I agree with your enthusiasm for The Warriors, as I have also been telling Harry. Such a brilliant piece! Give it a try, Harry! :D

Just back from listening to Alkan's Grande Sonata 'Les Quatre Ages' for the first time.

:o

No wonder my dad is a massive Alkan fan! This piece is absolutely amazing!  :)

Browsing the pages I was amazed that, among the other Alkan discs, this wasn't recommended. Easily explained. 8) Both of the sonatas are superb, indeed. I heartily second the Gibbons 2-fer recommendation, too.
And you really should listen to the rest of the Martinon/Debussy box soon  ;)

Thank you. And yes, I really should listen to the rest of the Martinon/Debussy box soon! ;) The first disc was just so so amazing though! However, I'll probably end up saying the same thing about the other discs soon. ;)

PS. Constantly I have to look at the cover painting and find myself irritated by these strange hats.

re ALKAN:
Dover had an edition of some of his works including the complete Concerto for Piano, it seems to be out of print though.  Used copies at amazon are at outrageous prices.  Raymond Lewenthal edited a collection which is worth tracking down for the introductory notes (published by Schirmer), nobody seems to want to part with their copy.

Well, I put in a small BRO order yesterday including the SQ disc below (have just one other from this Marco Polo series, i.e. V. 6) - actually for those interested in Spohr, there are a lot of good chamber CDs available there (believe that I've purchased many of my own from them) - :)
