Willoughby earl of Itacarius

I think Hakon Borresen should be more in the limelight as he currently is, because his well argued Violin Concerto in a thoroughly Romantic style is gorgeous. Brimful with evocative ideas, perceptive, and creative to a point it which it almost seems to me, reaches pinnacles in more then one way. The first movement is a colourful palette of imaginative scoring, especially the brass, and the writing for the solo instrument, it all blends together in so much compassion, that the argument is one you take up with every note, and draws you deeper into the context of the work. It has the same intensity and warmth Brahms has, but with a leap into a new era. But the roots are the same. It must be said with some emphasis that Rebecca Hirsch is more then a match for this Concerto, her playing is sumptuous yet detailed and argued in a straight way. Playing of a assured violinist. She is accompanied by a orchestra that follows without being obtrusive. The recording is very good, as is the performance. Recommended.

The Shostakovich string quartets have been extremely lucky on disc, and this is yet another fine version, cheap price, in good sound and with interesting couplings. Vol 2 will be available in a few days.

Wirén Serenade for strings
Sakari / Swedish Chamber Orchestra

This must be my fourth or fifth recording of the Serenade, and easily the liveliest.  Not sure if that's necessarily the best thing though. :-\
I know the work (the March is pretty weelknown) but don't have it on disc actually. Any recommendations?

This is a wonderful get together of some known and unknown composers, from romantic works, to modern, seamlessly.  I feel very fortunate having bought this CD in the Abeille sale 2010.  For me there is a lot to enjoy, primarily unknown works from a  high quality, for the compositions are. It will be on my playlist often. The performances and recording are first class.  Worthwhile to have.

August Enna,  Overture to Den lille pige med svovlstikkerne.

C E F Weyse,  Sigojnerdans from Festen pa Kenilworth.

Poul Schierbeck,  Prelude for Strings, I Danmark er jeg fodt.

J P E Hartmann,  Overture to Rovnen.

Louis Glass,  Episoder of H C Andersen eventyr "Elverhoj".

Finn Hoffding,  Det er ganske vist.

Odense SO, Ole Schmidt.

Quite interesting.

Second Listen Saturday (Hey, it had to happen someday; first of the recording, though)

Bohuslav Martinů
Cello Concerto No. 1
Raphael Wallfisch | Czech PO
Jiří Bělohlávek

I'd heard this concerto before on YouTube and liked the romantic 'Czhech-ness' of this work (as I do with most works of that nature); I look forward to No. 2 and the concertino.

Another composer I have come to admire over the years must be Peder Gram, not always easily accessible, because of his complex writing, but very rewarding if you take your time with him. In 2010 I bought Volume I & II containing orchestral works. Never regretted that! A unknown composer for most, also for me, but when I heard his first Symphony I was sold. He has a wide sound spectrum, sparkling indeed, and dramatically illustrative. At times it is like you walk through a enchanted forest with the mist surrounding you, in the midst of whiteness. Subtle orchestrations are also a trademark of Gram. Definitively a composer to check out. The performances are to my ears very good, as is the sound.

Volume I Orchestral Works. South Jutland SO, Matthias Aeschbacher.

Overture in C major.
Poeme Lyrique.

Symphony No. 1.

Prologue to a drama by Shakespeare.
