Third disc in Bavouzet's Haydn cycle.  Just as good as the first two, which is to say up there with the very best.

Landed today:

Scarlatti

Piano sonatas
(and a few pieces by other composers)

Nancy Laufer, accordion

This was on my wish list for long. I heard a bit of it in a radio review - very nice.

EDIT: Yes, my memory didn't make it too rosy, very beautiful and sounding totally natural on the instrument.

Haunting music. Absolutely amazing! My first Simpson symphony... was speechless after it!

Not to mince words, superb. Phrasing, articulation, coloring, everything feels perfect. I find it to be one of the best Schubert recitals of recent years (and I think it surpasses his already excellent previous Schubert disc of D.959 & 960 - which  I will listen to again one of these days, it's been a while).
Oh dear, I might have to get both of those discs - or wait for a possible box set.

This is only my second hearing. It is a powerful symphony. I'll have to encore it after dinner.

Mahler, you ought to go see it.

A superb recital. I'm curious to see what will Milne do with the op.10/2 Dithyramb in his upcoming 2-CD album (Demidenko here simply nails it).

Willoughby earl of Itacarius

Symphony No. 7.

A very powerful work, almost with Pettersson Tendencies, so beware. Anti depression guard at call. Fine performances and sound.

I think it's the most beautiful, absolutely thrilling! But I confess that I haven't listened to all Simpson's symphonies yet.

Now:
II - Kräftig bewegt, doch nicht zu schnell, Recht gemächlich
III - Feierlich und gemessen, ohne zu schleppen

It's a really amazing symphony, and it's his first!

Haydn: String Quartet No. 6 In C Major, Op. 1/6, H 3/6

Listening to the second Disc of this newly arrived set for the second time - this promises to be a wonderful Cycle! Im already 2 Discs in and the quality of the performances and sound on this set are outstanding. Haydn's string quartets are among my favourites and I play them often so this new set should see frequent use :)

I'd certainly agree in saying that it is an incredibly powerful piece, Sarge. Enjoy your encore!

Holmboe: String Quartet No. 2, Op. 47

Now playing the 2nd Disc of this set I think for about the 7th time - I have decided that I really like these quartets but think it will take me a lot of repeat listening to get to know them better (but it should be worth it as there are some wonderful moments so far!).

from a DGG Archiv LP, very German methodical in its organization and classification:
Western Europe from 1650 to 1800: Series BL: at the Court of Louis XIV
F. COUPERIN: Audite omnes, Deus virtutum conventere, Ostende nobis; Sébastien de BROSSARD: Quemadmodum desiderat cervus
Helmut Krebs, tenor   and a 6 member ensemble
on the other side from Series D: music from Couperin up to Rameau:

J-M. LECLAIR: Concerto in C for German Flute, strings & continuo op. 7/3
Hans-Martin Linde, members of the schola Cantorum Basiliensis  ,   August Wenzinger, cond.
These plain-jacket albums look academic and formidable but have some wonderful music on them
and a change:  GLAZUNOV:  Symphony no. 6 in c  op. 58
and later finish the MAHLER 1's with Ozawa and trhe Boston S.O.

My new favorite recording which reveals the lie to "Schumann is a poor orchestrator" myth revealing transparency, in this textured, swiftly paced passionate reading of Schumann's 2nd and 4th symphonies... I LOVE IT. 0:)

Dausgaard rocks! :)
