The 5th symphony I listened to this afternoon was absolutely a thrilling, powerful performance, very beautiful! I particularly liked the 2nd and the 3rd movement, really outstanding :D

This is great to hear, John. I have the Bertini set on my listening pile at the moment. I might try and listen to some before I start the Karajan Ring.
So, is this the first time you are actually enjoying the music? The beggining of a new era! :)

My goodness no, Daniel. I've always enjoyed Mahler's music. I went through a big Mahler phase several years ago. I just got interested in a lot of other composer's music and never looked back. This could be the beginning of a new era indeed!

I'm being a non-comformist.  I went with discs 1 & 3 (Preludes 1 and Images 1 & 2; Etudes, short works) to get a broader mix.  Crossley's style is most satisfying.  Haven't enjoyed a Debussy set this much since Rouvier.
Crossley's low profile has always baffled me, as he's struck me as consistently very impressive in pretty much anything he's recorded.

I suppose it's mostly because he hasn't recorded a lot outside of French and late-20th century music.

As for my listening: 3-6 from Herbert Blomstedt's excellent Sibelius cycle:

His Janacek recordings are superb, available in Decca's box.

Bach, JS Keyboard Works w/ Ivo Janssen - first 4 discs today; re-listening after a while - uniformly excellent interpretations on the piano - could live w/ this collection for a while; have all of these works on non-piano keyboards too, so nice to have an option depending on one's mood - :)

I've always loved Mahler's 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th, so I'll definitely be revisiting these. I finished with the 6th and I'm taking a little break right now, so in the meantime I'm playing this:

Listening to Bartok's The Miraculous Mandarin. Such powerful music and a great performance from Abbado.
