  Perhaps inspired by my listening??

First time around with these works. It will take me a while to get to Op.64 No.6 (CD 16 in this Angeles set).

You're going to love all these, Marvin.

I couldn't say it was directly inspired by your own listening . . . there's sort of a pile which I am working through on the Great Jazz Loft Storage Sleeves Project . . . .

The Années de pélerinage are so beautiful, absolutely wonderful! :D

I listened to Chamayou's recording of Années - all three volumes some time ago - great stuff, but it requires some stamina to get through that much of Liszt's piano music :)

Well reading this, I will stop recommending anything, for this slaughtering of the British composer box, hits me very hard. And I seriously doubt my own perception of music and its quality, so for now I will refrain from saying, buy this, for its very good. So anyone....never buy anything I am recommending, chances are its second rate. :-\

I'm tailoring my recs to Jeffrey's requirements - the box is 5/5 rating material for somebody like myself.

So far:
Beethoven PC 1 and 3 (Oppitz, Janowski)
Good, but Janowski's support is less than ideal

Schubert Winterreise (Fassbaender)
Took me 20 minutes to get used to it, after which it is in fact quite good.

Kvandal & Soderlind VC (Ragin)
The Kvandal is a wonderful work!

Earl Wild playing his own compositions
Well, quite exciting but not exactly great music.

Right now:
McEwen Quartets 4, 7, 16, 17 (Chillingirian Quartet)
I like this!
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Some days, Ilaria, I can listen to nothing but Liszt!

Sure, Liszt's music is full of an irresistible beauty, evocative power and intricate, but impressive harmonies, it deeply moves you!

Well, I can do it too, but it's very hard to leave out Wagner for me!

That Alkan's work is amazing, I really like it! ;D

I don't know what is wrong with your ears for sure, because there is nothing second rate about Elgar being second rate. There is nothing second rate about the performances, in fact they are bloody marvellous.

"In a word [Bostock's Job is] uncompetitive. Nothing but the best will do for VW's visionary masterpiece, but Douglas Bostock's new account falls short in so many key areas." --Gramophone

I guess there is something wrong with the Gramophone reviewer's ears too  ;D

Harry, you know not everyone judges a performance the same way. Just because you think it's good doesn't mean Jeffrey has to. There's no reason to insult his hearing or take offense because he doesn't agree with you.

That is exactly what I miss in many recordings, the lyrical side. I think I need them VERY lyrical :) My inner image of them is not gypsies dancing in the market place, but being full of joy and singing happily, floating in these tunes.

Thank you very much for your effort with the links, but I have no flash player installed. Are there also direct links to the you tube pages?

These I have:

Budapest FO, Iván Fischer
(like it a lot, but it certainly is not on the lyrical side)

SK Berlin, Suitner
(I like it, quite lyrical, but a bit heavy)

Alfred Brendel, Walter Klien, Beatriz Klien (piano)
(disappointing)

EDIT:

and the excerpt by Karajan, which I quite like.
Here is the first - the rest should be easy to find (you can also search 'brahms hungarian dances bogar': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFW5vBTB34M
