Great recording, but I really enjoy all of Bedford's Britten recordings on Naxos and he did a good one on Chandos too which contained the Cello Symphony and the orchestral suite of Death in Venice.

One of Solti's rare achievements in British music IMHO. A fine performance.

Inspired by the recent talk of Bernstein's music...

Now listening:

I was looking through my Bernstein collection earlier tonight and to my surprise I came across recordings of his music I had forgotten about. :-[

Knudage Riisager: Qarrtsiluni, op.36
Maneruenen, op. 57

Aarhus Symphony, Holden

The less than 10 minutes long Qarrtsiluni is a marvelous work. A masterpiece, in fact. The much longer ballet Maneruenen less so.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

I haven't been too impressed with Riisager's (I own all the Dacapo recordings so far), but I agree that Qarrtsiluni is a good work. I'm not sure about it being a masterpiece though.

Interestingly this is the very first time I hear Karajan's 60s Brahms 3rd, and have to say I'm not that keen on it. First movement is fine but Andante is way too aggressive and strings vs brass balance is not at all to my liking, especially in the finale.
Ferras' violin concerto is very fine though.
and not only the Brahms...

He is one of my favourite composers, thus I am duly impressed, and agreed its a master work.

I bought them all some years ago, when ordering some 80% of the MDG catalogue, and I can honestly say its not only pleasant listening, but well composed too. Well worth your money.
